Abstract
The records of Carolyn Gay Taft Farm Letter collection, donated by Christopher Mericle, includes check stubs and account books detailing the costs associated with running a farm on Old Mission Peninsula in the early 1900’s, as well as letters written to Carolyn Gay Taft by her farm hands or their wives, recounting agricultural and social events of that time. Series include: Account Books, Check Stubs, and Farm Letters.
History
Carolyn Gay Taft was a lady farmer in the early 1900’s on Old Mission Peninsula. She owned a 40-acre plot in Section 9, S.W. ¼ of N.E. ¼, T29N-R10W. A promissory note indicates that the purchase was made from Harry Zang, on April 18, 1911, in the amount of $900.
Carolyn was born in 1873 in Swanzey, New Hampshire, to Zina and Ella (Gay) Taft. She had three sisters: Grace Emily, Annie Elzina and May Ella. Carolyn Gay (also known as Carrie) attended Boston College from 1897-1899. She, and her sister Grace, taught at the Illinois State School for the Deaf (ISD) in Jacksonville. Grace, the only sister to marry, was the spouse of Asa Stutsman, whom she met at the ISD (he was the Boy’s Supervisor).
Summer cottages, in what has since become known as the Illini Orchards on Old Mission Peninsula, were occupied by vacationers connected with the school. Their affiliation with the Peninsula predates the turn of the 20th century. Edward Cleary, a deaf member of the ISD staff, built a log cabin here in 1898/9 and Asa spent several summers there. When the old “Montague Place” a cherry farm, became available, he purchased it in 1909. Asa and Grace called this place “Sagacre Orchards”.
Carolyn’s sisterly attachment to Grace led her to purchase a small cherry farm as close as possible to the Stutsman farm. She was actively involved in farming from 1911 until the mid-1940’s. Because Carolyn’s primary job was as a teacher at the ISD, hired farm hands ran the farm in her absence during the Fall and Winter months. These farmers, and their families, lived on the farm and sent frequent written reports to Ms. Taft. Most letters are written by the farmer’s wives and provide a record of both agricultural and social history.
Ralph Kitchen (1913-1915)
Joseph Kitchen and Essie Kitchen, children Roger and Hazel (1920/21, 1924 – June, 1931)
Max Gilmore and Hazel Gilmore, child Ronald (Sept, 1931 – 1939)
There are approximately 382 letters.
The Mericle Family, who donated Carolyn’s letters, are descendants of Grace and Asa. Their mother, Rebecca, was the daughter of Grace and Asa. Rebecca was married to Dale Mericle. Their children were Carolyn Gay, Lucy Ann, and Christopher Dale. Christopher donated the letters to Peninsula Community Library in 2021, on behalf of the Mericle family.
Scope and Content Note
Artifacts from running the Taft farm include letters from the hired farm hands (or their spouses), checkbook stubs and account books detailing the costs of wages, animals, seeds, farm implements, house maintenance, etc., as well as crop prices. The letters especially provide a wealth of information, not only on weather conditions, crops, and animals, but also on family life, illnesses, and neighborhood happenings at the turn of the century. Series include: Account Books, Check Stubs, and Farm Letters.

Abstract
The H. K. Brinkman Family featured in this collection lived in Old Mission, Michigan. The collection consists mostly of materials relating to the businesses that H.K. started in the mid-1800’s, deeds to the properties that he owned, descendent information, copies of maps of the Old Mission area, documentation of Civil War battles that he participated in and biographical information.
History
Henry K. Brinkman was born in 1827 in the abbey town of Meinhausen, Germany, which was part of Prussia at that time. An apprenticed shoemaker, he migrated to America in 1847. Over a period of four to five years, he worked his way up from New Orleans, to Detroit, and finally to Old Mission. One of the first European white settlers, he established himself as a businessman, opening a shoe store (~1854), a blacksmith shop and an apple evaporator business (1902). H.K hired Elizabeth Bullen to oversee the apple evaporating operation until 1906, when the building burned down. H.K. was also a fruit farmer, owning over 300 acres, 120 of which he legally acquired in 1854 from Thaddeus Clark. Thaddeus had been granted the land for serving in the military as a soldier in the War of 1812.
In 1854, H.K. married Keziah Colburn Hedges (born 1825 in Walnut Hill, OH) and they had four children together – Alonzo, Theresa, Eugene and Lewis. In 1861 he voluntarily joined the Union Army as a private in the 4th Indiana Light Artillery. He fought in numerous battles, including the March of 1862 in Tennessee and in a battle in Chicamauga, GA in 1863. He was mustered out of service in 1864 with the rank of Artificer. H.K. went on to serve as Treasurer for Peninsula Township (1858) and as President of the Grand Traverse Union Agricultural Society (1883).
Other Old Mission notable names associated with the Brinkman family, through marriages, include Tompkins, Parmalee, and Wait.
The items in this collection were copied from the archives held by Jacquelyn Field Burns Thomas, who is the great, great granddaughter of H.K. Brinkman. Jackie’s historical narratives can be found throughout the collection.

Abstract: The Foote family owned and operated a tannery in the Traverse City area
during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This collection of documents
primarily relates to a descendant of John Newcomb Foote (1825-1902), Clara Foote
Ferrell, and her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution organization.
Documents include photographs, news clippings, certificates, articles, land titles,
albums, and membership documents related to the Daughters of the American
Revolution.
History: John Newcomb Foote (1825-1902) was born in Clinton, Oneida county, New
York and moved to Wexford county in 1869. Foote found employment at the Traverse
City Tanney established by the Norris brothers in Norrisville (on the shore two miles
north of Traverse City, Michigan) during several increments of time beginning in 1871
and continuing until 1880. In 1880, Foote rented the Norrisville tannery, after which point
he erected a new building on the bay shore and purchased the stock and machinery of
the former Norrisville plant. Foote continued operating his tanney business successfully
until his death in 1902.
John Newcomb Foote married Miss Virginia Jenison in 1956, and the couple had two
sons and three daughters: Rose (died at age six), William (b. 1861), John N. (b. 1863),
Cora (b. 1865), and Clara (b. 1874). John Newcomb Foote II learned the tanning trade
under his father and eventually became a partner in the tanning business, thereafter
named Johnson Foote & Son. Both John Newcomb Foote and John Newcomb Foote II
participated in local politics, each serving as the treasurer of Elmwood Township during
different periods of time.
Clara Foote Ferrell married Clarence Willard Ferrell in 1908 in Charlevoix, Michigan.
Clara was an active member of the John Sackett chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution for fifty + years. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)
is a lineage-based membership service organization for women who claim direct
descent from individuals who were involved in the American campaign for
independence. The organization was founded in 1890 and has a central mission of
promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Clara Foote Ferrell claimed
membership to the DAR as a descendant of John Foote (a private who served during
the Revolutionary War), Benjamin Lull, Joseph Lull, Samuel Cunnabell, William
Newcomb, Peter Jenison, and Ebenezer Knapp.

Abstract:
Harry Alonzo “Al” Barnes was a photographer and historian in the Grand Traverse
region who worked at the Traverse City Record-Eagle for the bulk of his career. This
collection includes photographs and photo negatives primarily from the Cherry Festivals
1953-1959, as well as photos from a 1956-1957 New Year’s parade.
History
Al Barnes (1904-1995) was a journalist at the Traverse City Record-Eagle from
1937-1967, and implemented the newspaper’s at the time state-of-the-art engraving
shop for photographs, and wrote, photographed, and photo engraved for the paper. He
subsequently worked for The Preview Community Weekly from 1975-1990. Barnes is
well known for his four books on Grand Traverse regional history, and was considered
the area’s senior historian.
The National Cherry Festival was established in 1926 and is hosted annually to
celebrate the Northern Michigan region’s cherry production.
Scope and Content Note:
Consists of black and white photographs, photograph negatives, original envelopes
used to store photographs, and Cherry Festival raffle pin envelopes.

Abstract: The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City is a women’s gardening and
landscaping club founded in 1923 in Traverse City, Michigan and is a member of the
Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan. This collection contains their meeting minutes,
presidents’ books, photographs, scrapbooks, moving images, financial records,
membership ledgers, ephemera, and publications.
History: The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City was organized in 1923 by two
sisters, Edna Barnum Lawton and Annette Barnum Power. The club became a member
of the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, INC in 1931. The Friendly Garden Club is
structured into committees; program, civic beautification, horticulture, highway
improvement, garden therapy, publicity, conservation, junior gardening club, and
membership.
The objectives of the Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City are as follows; providing
education, promoting the love of gardening, landscape and floral design, encouraging
civic beautification and environmental responsibility. This civic beautification objective is
pursued through projects where the club members garden and landscape local public
city parks. The “Friendlies”, as they may refer to themselves, also participate in flower
shows. Often these flower shows are to fundraise for gardening projects such as the
improvement of school gardens. The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City has
received numerous awards.

Abstract
The Peninsula Family History records include records created by, or collected by, Township residents to formalize the history of the township and the people that have lived there. Series in the collection are: Leffingwell Resort Families, Local History Talks, Oral Histories, Periodicals, Photographs, Published Works, Reminiscences.
History
The settlement at Old Mission was founded in May 1839 by Reverend Peter Dougherty and Reverend John Fleming, and was the first European settlement in the Grand Traverse Bay region. In addition to the mission, the settlers founded a school there, and developed peaceful relations with the native population, consisting of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, living in and around the harbor.
As word spread of the excellent growing conditions in the area, and roads were extended northward, white settlers moved to the area. In 1853, the Peninsula Township was formally organized. On May 20, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act into law. The act, which took effect January 1, 1863, granted 160 acres of unappropriated public lands to anyone who paid a small filing fee and agreed to work on the land and improve it, including by building a residence, over a five-year period. In the spring of 1874, the Indian reserves were opened to homesteaders, bringing more settlers to the area. With this growth, seven distinct unincorporated communities were established. Each boasted a one-room schoolhouse and were placed such that no child had to walk further than a reasonable difference (approximately 1.5 miles) to attend classes there. (In 1955 a bond was passed to consolidate into one school).
The communities were all rural farming communities, growing a variety of fruits, predominantly apples. Organizations, such as the Grange and Woman’s Clubs, and the volunteer fire department, were significant in building a sense of community. Resort communities also grew, including Leffingwell Resort, the Neahtawanta Resort Association (Bowers Harbor), the Old Mission Beach Resort, and the Illini Cottagers Association.
In 1905, cherries became the fruit of choice. In 1974 the first 35 acres of vines were planted for growing grapes specifically for wine making. Wineries, cherry and apple orchards and other agricultural ventures continue to be essential for sustaining and growing the community. Although the center of commerce has shifted to Traverse City at the base of the Peninsula, the area continues to be a tourist destination for its beautiful landscape and farms.
Scope and Content Note
Leffingwell Resort Families includes brief histories of notable residents of the Leffingwell Resort (located just north of Haserot Beach).
Local History Talks is an online video collection of various talks that took place at Peninsula Community Library recounting stories and information about families on Old Mission Peninsula.
Oral Histories consists of four cassette tapes recorded at Old Mission Historical Society (OMHS) events held in 1987, and a series of oral histories, recorded OMHS events, and short histories, all produced by local historian and OMHS member, Ken Weaver.
Also this collection contains a subset of transcribed women’s oral histories, specific to the Peninsula that were obtained via the Women’s History Project of Northwest Michigan (WHPNM), a 501c3 which was begun in Traverse City, Michigan (2000-2019). It was a membership organization led by a Board of Directors. Its mission was to preserve and recognize the contributions of women to their families and communities in northwest lower Michigan. These recollections offer insights into women’s domestic and professional lives covering much of the 20th century. The complete collection of oral/written histories resides in the archives at the main branch of the Traverse Area District Library (TADL).
Periodicals is a scattered collection of periodicals that mention some aspect of Old Mission Peninsula life and Grand Traverse County. Most of these have been collected by the Peninsula Community Library staff, and are locally published.
Photographs include a small collection of largely unidentified and undated images.
Published Works include written accounts by Old Mission Peninsula residents about their lives on the Peninsula. Various authors, dates and subjects are represented. Also a copy of “Sprague's history of Grand Traverse and Leelanaw counties, Michigan”, which contains brief biographies of prominent residents at the time of publication (1903).
Reminiscences include unpublished written accounts by Old Mission Peninsula residents about their lives on the Peninsula. Various authors, dates and subjects are represented.

Abstract
The Peninsula Historic Sites and Church records include records created or collected by the Township government, Township residents, and members of 501c3 organizations, to formalize the history of the township’s Historic Sites and Churches and the people that have owned, worked, volunteered, or restored these sites. Series in the collection are: American Legion Post 399, Church Histories, Dougherty Historic Home Site, Hessler Log Cabin, Mission Log Church, Mission Point Lighthouse, Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, Periodicals, Porter House, and Reports.
History
There are numerous historic sites located on the Peninsula that are owned by the Peninsula Township Government. These include:
The Mission Point Lighthouse - resurrected from 15 years of abandonment by a group of Peninsula residents who collected monies in 1948 to purchase and preserve it. Originally built in 1870. Today it is surrounded by five acres of wooded Township land (purchased after WWII) and hundreds of acres of State land, all with miles of trails.
The adjoining Hessler Log Cabin - a log home that was built in the 1854-1856 timeframe in the southern part of the Old Mission Peninsula by early settlers Mary and Joseph Hessler. It was conceived to be moved to the Lighthouse Park in 1992, and was actually moved, repaired and furnished during 1993-1997.
The Peter Dougherty House & Historic Site – named for Peter Dougherty, a Presbyterian missionary minister who arrived in 1839 to establish a church and school for the Native Americans who inhabited the area. This area became known as Old Mission. The site contained a church, schoolhouse, bark houses, and cabins, as well as a frame house that was built in 1842 by Native Americans to house Reverend Dougherty and his family. Built of hemlock, it was the first frame house in Northwest Lower Michigan north of Grand Rapids.
The Mission Church, which is a reproduction church, built in 1939 to commemorate the Centennial.
These government owned sites have been assisted in their preservation by 501(c)(3) volunteer supported organizations, including the Peter Dougherty Society, the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (founded in 1992 by a core group of citizens concerned about saving the Hessler Log House), and the Mission Point Lighthouse Friends (2014-2019).
Other privately owned historic locations include the Old Mission Inn (previously known as Hedden Hall and the Porter House), the Neahtawanta Inn, and the Old Mission General Store (previously known as Lardie’s Grocery).
The Peninsula also is home to numerous churches, including the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church (formerly known as the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church). Both churches started out as much smaller country churches but are now housed in more modern structures in order to accommodate their growing congregations. Other churches include the Old Mission Congregational Church, the First Congregational Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse.
Scope and Content Note
American Legion Post 399 includes a digital talk about the history of the Legion Hall, located in Old Mission, on the corner of Swaney Road and Traverse Street. Originally built in 1898 as a clubhouse for the Knights of the Macabees. It was deeded in 1926 to Peninsula Township School District and used as a Community Building until 1962, at which time it passed into the hands of the American Legion. It was rebuilt in the 1990’s, due to a fire that burned down the original building.
Church Histories include the history published by concerned members of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church to record the history of the institution, and scattered records and photographs of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church. Also documents associated with Old Mission Congregational Church. Digital talk on these churches, plus the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse and the now defunct Swedish Church, including physical photographs.
Dougherty Historic Home Site includes history about the Peter Dougherty homestead and mission site, as well as information about the Peter Dougherty Pier archaeological site. The Pier, which was located ½ mile south of what is today known as Haserot Beach, was built in the early 1840’s. It opened up trade with fur merchants from Mackinac, as well as provided a means for bringing in supplies that were given in exchange for furs provided by the Indians.
Hessler Log Cabin is a sequential collection of documents and photographs kept by Julianne Meyers, from the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS). The information spans the timeframe from when the idea was conceived to move the cabin to the Lighthouse Park (1992) to the dedication ceremony of the Historical Marker on August 18, 2001. Includes upkeep duties of the Township vs OMPHS, history of the cabin and history of its restoration, as well as a list of donors and donations.
Mission Log Church deserves its own category due to its history and breadth of information. Initially, this log building, built by missionary Peter Dougherty, was located in Elk Rapids. The building was disassembled and rebuilt as a church in Old Mission, in the early 1840’s. At some point this original building was razed, and the replica church was rebuilt in 1939. A centennial celebration was held on June 30, 1939 to dedicate the replica and celebrate the 100th birthday of Old Mission.
Mission Point Lighthouse is a four-volume collection of compiled photocopied archival materials in January 2010. Compiled by the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, these volumes are comprised of photocopies of letters, documents, reports, logbooks, drawing and photographs, documenting the history of the Mission Point Lighthouse. The collection was developed from the holdings of several private comprehensive records of the Lighthouse that are accessible to researchers. The collection is primarily organized chronologically except for materials that appear in the fourth volume. The collection was donated by the Society to the Library to promote use of the collection by community members.
Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS) includes copies of their newsletters, early bylaws, and documentation on tentative Historical Policy and attempts to create a Historic District in the Village of Old Mission.
Periodicals is a scattered collection of periodicals that mention some aspect of Old Mission Peninsula life and Grand Traverse County. Most of these have been collected by the Peninsula Community Library staff and are locally published.
The Porter House was built in 1869 by George and Betsy Hedden and was originally known as Hedden Hall. This 31-room hotel was also home to the Old Mission Post Office from 1869-1889. Sold to Alfred and Ella Porter in 1902, it became known as The Porter House. The hotel welcomed passengers that arrived at the docks at Old Mission Harbor. Purported guests include Babe Ruth and Joe Louis, circa 1936. The Porters also ran the Old Mission Citizens Telephone Company at this location from 1906-1926. The hotel changed hands in 1945 (sold to Norman and Doris Nevinger) and it became known as The Old Mission Inn. In 1998 another set of owners, Bruce and Angie Jensen, purchased the Inn.
Reports include primarily published reports on various topics, including information about artifacts from shipwrecks near Old Mission.
