Abstract
The Peninsula Family History records include records created by, or collected by, Township residents to formalize the history of the township and the people that have lived there. Series in the collection are: Leffingwell Resort Families, Local History Talks, Oral Histories, Periodicals, Photographs, Published Works, Reminiscences.
History
The settlement at Old Mission was founded in May 1839 by Reverend Peter Dougherty and Reverend John Fleming, and was the first European settlement in the Grand Traverse Bay region. In addition to the mission, the settlers founded a school there, and developed peaceful relations with the native population, consisting of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, living in and around the harbor.
As word spread of the excellent growing conditions in the area, and roads were extended northward, white settlers moved to the area. In 1853, the Peninsula Township was formally organized. On May 20, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act into law. The act, which took effect January 1, 1863, granted 160 acres of unappropriated public lands to anyone who paid a small filing fee and agreed to work on the land and improve it, including by building a residence, over a five-year period. In the spring of 1874, the Indian reserves were opened to homesteaders, bringing more settlers to the area. With this growth, seven distinct unincorporated communities were established. Each boasted a one-room schoolhouse and were placed such that no child had to walk further than a reasonable difference (approximately 1.5 miles) to attend classes there. (In 1955 a bond was passed to consolidate into one school).
The communities were all rural farming communities, growing a variety of fruits, predominantly apples. Organizations, such as the Grange and Woman’s Clubs, and the volunteer fire department, were significant in building a sense of community. Resort communities also grew, including Leffingwell Resort, the Neahtawanta Resort Association (Bowers Harbor), the Old Mission Beach Resort, and the Illini Cottagers Association.
In 1905, cherries became the fruit of choice. In 1974 the first 35 acres of vines were planted for growing grapes specifically for wine making. Wineries, cherry and apple orchards and other agricultural ventures continue to be essential for sustaining and growing the community. Although the center of commerce has shifted to Traverse City at the base of the Peninsula, the area continues to be a tourist destination for its beautiful landscape and farms.
Scope and Content Note
Leffingwell Resort Families includes brief histories of notable residents of the Leffingwell Resort (located just north of Haserot Beach).
Local History Talks is an online video collection of various talks that took place at Peninsula Community Library recounting stories and information about families on Old Mission Peninsula.
Oral Histories consists of four cassette tapes recorded at Old Mission Historical Society (OMHS) events held in 1987, and a series of oral histories, recorded OMHS events, and short histories, all produced by local historian and OMHS member, Ken Weaver.
Also this collection contains a subset of transcribed women’s oral histories, specific to the Peninsula that were obtained via the Women’s History Project of Northwest Michigan (WHPNM), a 501c3 which was begun in Traverse City, Michigan (2000-2019). It was a membership organization led by a Board of Directors. Its mission was to preserve and recognize the contributions of women to their families and communities in northwest lower Michigan. These recollections offer insights into women’s domestic and professional lives covering much of the 20th century. The complete collection of oral/written histories resides in the archives at the main branch of the Traverse Area District Library (TADL).
Periodicals is a scattered collection of periodicals that mention some aspect of Old Mission Peninsula life and Grand Traverse County. Most of these have been collected by the Peninsula Community Library staff, and are locally published.
Photographs include a small collection of largely unidentified and undated images.
Published Works include written accounts by Old Mission Peninsula residents about their lives on the Peninsula. Various authors, dates and subjects are represented. Also a copy of “Sprague's history of Grand Traverse and Leelanaw counties, Michigan”, which contains brief biographies of prominent residents at the time of publication (1903).
Reminiscences include unpublished written accounts by Old Mission Peninsula residents about their lives on the Peninsula. Various authors, dates and subjects are represented.

Abstract
The Peninsula Historic Sites and Church records include records created or collected by the Township government, Township residents, and members of 501c3 organizations, to formalize the history of the township’s Historic Sites and Churches and the people that have owned, worked, volunteered, or restored these sites. Series in the collection are: American Legion Post 399, Church Histories, Dougherty Historic Home Site, Hessler Log Cabin, Mission Log Church, Mission Point Lighthouse, Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, Periodicals, Porter House, and Reports.
History
There are numerous historic sites located on the Peninsula that are owned by the Peninsula Township Government. These include:
The Mission Point Lighthouse - resurrected from 15 years of abandonment by a group of Peninsula residents who collected monies in 1948 to purchase and preserve it. Originally built in 1870. Today it is surrounded by five acres of wooded Township land (purchased after WWII) and hundreds of acres of State land, all with miles of trails.
The adjoining Hessler Log Cabin - a log home that was built in the 1854-1856 timeframe in the southern part of the Old Mission Peninsula by early settlers Mary and Joseph Hessler. It was conceived to be moved to the Lighthouse Park in 1992, and was actually moved, repaired and furnished during 1993-1997.
The Peter Dougherty House & Historic Site – named for Peter Dougherty, a Presbyterian missionary minister who arrived in 1839 to establish a church and school for the Native Americans who inhabited the area. This area became known as Old Mission. The site contained a church, schoolhouse, bark houses, and cabins, as well as a frame house that was built in 1842 by Native Americans to house Reverend Dougherty and his family. Built of hemlock, it was the first frame house in Northwest Lower Michigan north of Grand Rapids.
The Mission Church, which is a reproduction church, built in 1939 to commemorate the Centennial.
These government owned sites have been assisted in their preservation by 501(c)(3) volunteer supported organizations, including the Peter Dougherty Society, the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (founded in 1992 by a core group of citizens concerned about saving the Hessler Log House), and the Mission Point Lighthouse Friends (2014-2019).
Other privately owned historic locations include the Old Mission Inn (previously known as Hedden Hall and the Porter House), the Neahtawanta Inn, and the Old Mission General Store (previously known as Lardie’s Grocery).
The Peninsula also is home to numerous churches, including the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church (formerly known as the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church). Both churches started out as much smaller country churches but are now housed in more modern structures in order to accommodate their growing congregations. Other churches include the Old Mission Congregational Church, the First Congregational Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse.
Scope and Content Note
American Legion Post 399 includes a digital talk about the history of the Legion Hall, located in Old Mission, on the corner of Swaney Road and Traverse Street. Originally built in 1898 as a clubhouse for the Knights of the Macabees. It was deeded in 1926 to Peninsula Township School District and used as a Community Building until 1962, at which time it passed into the hands of the American Legion. It was rebuilt in the 1990’s, due to a fire that burned down the original building.
Church Histories include the history published by concerned members of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church to record the history of the institution, and scattered records and photographs of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church. Also documents associated with Old Mission Congregational Church. Digital talk on these churches, plus the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse and the now defunct Swedish Church, including physical photographs.
Dougherty Historic Home Site includes history about the Peter Dougherty homestead and mission site, as well as information about the Peter Dougherty Pier archaeological site. The Pier, which was located ½ mile south of what is today known as Haserot Beach, was built in the early 1840’s. It opened up trade with fur merchants from Mackinac, as well as provided a means for bringing in supplies that were given in exchange for furs provided by the Indians.
Hessler Log Cabin is a sequential collection of documents and photographs kept by Julianne Meyers, from the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS). The information spans the timeframe from when the idea was conceived to move the cabin to the Lighthouse Park (1992) to the dedication ceremony of the Historical Marker on August 18, 2001. Includes upkeep duties of the Township vs OMPHS, history of the cabin and history of its restoration, as well as a list of donors and donations.
Mission Log Church deserves its own category due to its history and breadth of information. Initially, this log building, built by missionary Peter Dougherty, was located in Elk Rapids. The building was disassembled and rebuilt as a church in Old Mission, in the early 1840’s. At some point this original building was razed, and the replica church was rebuilt in 1939. A centennial celebration was held on June 30, 1939 to dedicate the replica and celebrate the 100th birthday of Old Mission.
Mission Point Lighthouse is a four-volume collection of compiled photocopied archival materials in January 2010. Compiled by the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, these volumes are comprised of photocopies of letters, documents, reports, logbooks, drawing and photographs, documenting the history of the Mission Point Lighthouse. The collection was developed from the holdings of several private comprehensive records of the Lighthouse that are accessible to researchers. The collection is primarily organized chronologically except for materials that appear in the fourth volume. The collection was donated by the Society to the Library to promote use of the collection by community members.
Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS) includes copies of their newsletters, early bylaws, and documentation on tentative Historical Policy and attempts to create a Historic District in the Village of Old Mission.
Periodicals is a scattered collection of periodicals that mention some aspect of Old Mission Peninsula life and Grand Traverse County. Most of these have been collected by the Peninsula Community Library staff and are locally published.
The Porter House was built in 1869 by George and Betsy Hedden and was originally known as Hedden Hall. This 31-room hotel was also home to the Old Mission Post Office from 1869-1889. Sold to Alfred and Ella Porter in 1902, it became known as The Porter House. The hotel welcomed passengers that arrived at the docks at Old Mission Harbor. Purported guests include Babe Ruth and Joe Louis, circa 1936. The Porters also ran the Old Mission Citizens Telephone Company at this location from 1906-1926. The hotel changed hands in 1945 (sold to Norman and Doris Nevinger) and it became known as The Old Mission Inn. In 1998 another set of owners, Bruce and Angie Jensen, purchased the Inn.
Reports include primarily published reports on various topics, including information about artifacts from shipwrecks near Old Mission.

Abstract
The Peninsula Township Government History records include records created by the Township government in the process of carrying out the functions of a township, as well as records associated with maintaining the rural, farming and architectural character of the Peninsula. Series in the collection are: Directories, Periodicals, Photographs, Published Works, Reports, Township Records, and Maps and Tours.
History
In 1839, the Reverend Peter Dougherty was sent to the Grand Traverse Region, by the Presbyterian Board of Missions, to establish a church and school for the Native Americans who inhabited the area. In conjunction with Chief Ahgosa of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, the mission was established in the area of what is the present day site of Old Mission, Michigan, located on a peninsula 18 miles north of Traverse City. The Mission was supported by the United States pursuant to the Treaty of 1836. The tribe held no legal title to the land. The revised State constitution of 1850 granted citizenship to Indians who had been civilized, allowing them to purchase land from the government. Since the Old Mission land was not on the market for settlement, they purchased land in Omena and moved there in 1852.
As word spread of the excellent growing conditions in the area, white settlers moved to the area. On April 4, 1853, Peninsula Township was organized by a vote of 33 residents. The following positions were voted in: Supervisor, Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, School Inspector, Highway Commissioner, Justice of the Peace, and Constable. By 1860, according to the census, there were a total of 421 men, women and children. The chief profession was listed as “farmer”. Over time, the area became famous for its fruit orchards, especially cherries and apples. In the late 1800’s, inns and resort associations started to appear that catered to summer visitors. The township hall was built in 1876.
As residential development continued, in 1994 the Peninsula townships voters approved a tax of 1.25 mills for 15 years to fund the first Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program. This program would provide farmers and owners of scenic land with cash that would allow them to continue to use their properties in a way that protects the Peninsula’s rural character. A renewal and increase of the PDR millage (2 mills for 20 years) took place in 2002.
Although the center of commerce has shifted to Traverse City at the base of the Peninsula, the area continues to be a tourist destination for its beautiful landscape and farms. Wineries, cherry orchards and other agricultural ventures continue to be essential for sustaining and growing the community.
Scope and Content Note
Directories is an incomplete collection of directories that includes information on residents and businesses of Old Mission Peninsula. For a more complete collection, visit the Traverse Area District Library, Main Library.
Periodicals is a scattered collection of periodicals that mention some aspects of Old Mission Peninsula life and Grand Traverse County. Most of these have been collected by the Peninsula Community Library staff, and are locally published.
Photographs include a small collection of farm and property images.
Published Works include written accounts by Old Mission Peninsula residents.
Reports include primarily unpublished reports on various topics related to Old Mission Parks and Land Management
Township Records include various records created by the Township government in the process of carrying out the functions of a township as specified by the Legislature of the State of Michigan. Records include the reports of various committees of the Township, i.e., the Township Board and the Highway Commission, as well as financial information relevant to these committees.
The Peninsula Township Register of Voters ledgers, spanning the years 1919-1946, contain information on individual voters in Peninsula Township, Grand Traverse County, Michigan. The ledgers contain the following information: first and last name of voter, current address, date of registration and a tally of the number of elections in which the individual voted. Also includes amendments to personal information, i.e., surname changes, event of death, removal from the voting district. Some registers contain additional information about voters, including birthplace, date of naturalization and race. Of special note, the records include the first register of women voters after the passing of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution. The Party Enrollment ledger lists male voters in the Township and their political party affiliation, 1906-1910. In addition to given names and surnames, current address, birthplace, age and race were also recorded.
The Peninsula Township Journals begin with an entry describing the Township’s organization on 4 April 1853. They contain minutes from the Annual Township Meetings and meetings of the Township Board, as well as brief reports made to the Board by the Highway Commission and the Board of School Inspectors. Additional committees may also be represented. Financial records are included within these reports as well, issued by the Treasurer of the Township. All entries in the journals are recorded by the Township Clerk. Details of elections and appointments to various committees are also recorded in the journals.
Maps and Tours includes items retained by the Peninsula Community Library for their historical value, focusing on the businesses, farm lands and township cemeteries of Peninsula Township. Also contains survey maps of Old Mission Peninsula, handwritten from the late 1880s, Peninsula Township Plat Maps from 1856-1908, Grand Traverse County plat books from 1895 and 1908, and published tours of the Old Mission Peninsula.
