Have intended to write before this but have been quite busy.

Roger has been home for the past week with the mumps. He is on the gain now and hope he continues to improve. Most men and boys are having them very hard so I have been more than careful with son. Expect Hazel will begin to get fat in a few days. This is a poor time to miss school. As they have only about five more weeks of school and then have to take state tests.

There is quite a boom here on shore property. Some of it was bought cheap but most of it has been going for a big price. Of course people are valueing their farms double but none are selling. A great deal of this property is being held up on an option so the Real Estate fellows sell their options on to another fellow. It is hard to get in on these things because these fellows arn't telling their business to every one We hear so many things that it is hard to tell what is correct. I think you wise to hold your farm for a while maybe the right fellow will come along so you could get all cash for it. It is a nice place and would make a good home. I wouldn't ask for anything nicer for myself to live. Am afraid it is way beyond our reach. At least for a few years.

We have decided not to buy a pig and keep a few chickens closed up. Maybe they will lay a few eggs for us during the Summer. We don't want to have any-thing that you don't approve of all together. Of course it is a great saving to have your own meat.

The ice is still solid in the bay and will stay all Summer if this weather continues. There is lots of snow in the woods and quite a little in the fiel[?] yet and the roads wo[?] be fairly good if it wasn't for the cars trying to travel on them. Joseph went up the next day after your letter came and hauled 29 bu of hay down but couldn't go after any more. As there are so many bare spots now. So will he have the remainder brought down by truck later on?

We have heard that Mr. Ashmore isn't going to be on the farm this summer he has two hired men to take care of the place. I wonder why he would trust so much to stranger's. It won't be but a few yrs. and all that poor Miss Morris and Kent worked so hard for will be ruined. It is such a pity to see that nice place go down the way it has.

That Kauer cow is still waiting I wonder why? That is the way when you have to buy stock you don't know of course she was a cheap cow but oughto have been all right I should think. Maybe she will come along all right yet but it is so late in the season hope she hurries up.

I just read your letter over to be sure not to leave any thing out. Mr. Carl Pratt and some fellow from Chicago came here in the Fall and bought some property along bay shore and then Marshall Pratt & Roy Holmes did a lot more buying don't know who all is in it.

Joseph bought the horses hay in town as long as you were buying it any way.

Cherries are budded very heavy. And fine weather for them so far. It has been thawing some today and wind is blowing tonight hope it leaves the north so we will have a little rain.

We will be lucky to plant oats the 1st of May here.

With love, Essie K.

Milling Co. was out of Alfalfa so had to get timothy.

[$].25 for horses hay.
[$].25 barn rent.

Apr. 13th 1931

Dear Miss. Taft: -

Recieved your letter today and will hasten to reply. We are having very nice weather in fact nicer than I like to see it this time of the year. The snow is gone in fields but no rain so far. The ground is very much in need of it as we have had such high winds that dries every thing up.

Our cow freshened about Christmas time and your's last week so that is over for once more when should we take her away again? It isn't wise to take them too soon as they need strength the same as any thing else does.

Miss Taft please don't let this worry you as Joseph will stay until you come and get some one else And he will spray and take the same care of your farm as always. If he could posibly do the work alone we would stay with you. It isn't that I'm tired of living here and would like my own place best. Roger will soon be 20 years old and feels like having his own money so Jos. can't afford to pay him and work like he has to. You know Jos. has never been well since he over worked that one Summer. I would certanly rather be sure of a steady salary than to leave a good job. I would still like to be friends and if there is anything we can do to help would only be too glad to do it. It won't be so hard on you changing help if you are here to see to things your self. Spraying is the most important part of your farm work. If the places were closer together it would be much easier.

We expect spray material every day now + the treess will soon be ready for dousing Jos. don't like to put it on while freezing nights. The trees that have had oil spray look odd. All the dust and dirt cling on them. I'm afraid of that stuff altho' lots of the farmers are using it.

I'm sorry I mentioned Edd to you he didn't intend for you to cook his meals he could have did that himself. But he has hired out for the Summer now. As to the neighbors talking there are some that I would like to tie their tongues up. Most of the people here have been very nice to me and I love it here. It wouldn't be so bad if people could tell things as they hear it.

Joseph wants me to tell you that the garden lot you had seeded last year came thru fine and says its a pity to plow it up and seed over. We will plant your garden here as you wished. Jos. and Roger are busy every minute now as the time is at hand to hurry every thing along.

I've been under the weather all day so must go to bed now. I have so much to do that I can't lie down and rest during the day.

Hope you keep well.

As ever Essie K.

P.S. Please don't think hard of us as we will be on the square with you. And not leave while you are away. You will receive your buds in a few days now.

April 14th 1927

My Dear Miss Taft: - Received your good letter tonight & was very glad to hear from you. The weather is nice but the cold winds holds the fruit back. I am going to send you some fruit buds a little later on. The spraying was done over a week ago so that is off our minds for a while. I know our cherries are all OK so far. It freezes out nearly every night so Jos hasn't put in clover seed. He intends to lime the ground next week. We have the cherry trees all set & they look nice. Jos hired Charlie for 1 1/2 days at $2.50 per day and I won't charge you for his meals. I want to treat you the same as you do me and there is so little I can do for any one. I won't forget the many nice car rides you gave to me.

We have thot' things over and as you are so kind as to let Joseph do his own work in the orchard we will let you live over there free of charge & make every thing as comforable for you as we can. Most every tree in our orchard is all barked up from hired help. We would like to save what is left. It is hard to find any one you can trust out of your sight now days. The spraying is one of the main things to attend to. We bought our spray materials from H.M.L. too. He is honest to deal with and very reasonable. Joseph got the repairs for the plow that he broke last fall while plowing alfalfa sod. It was $2.25 the bill is paid. We saw the oil man & will get gas next week.

Mr. Allen is trying to put a well down on the Breeden farm. Are having a hard time of it. Mr. Holmes & Pratt sold a little wood to several people in log lengths for $1.35 a cord right in the woods. We hear they are pretty hard up this Spring. If we have fair weather from now on the cherries will be very fine & lots of them. Joseph says the wire that is up there will be badly broken if taken off. Was your plans to tear old fence down or use new wire. I don't blame you for not adding extra expense if you are going to sell out because you wouldn't get any thing extra for that.

Well must get ready for bed will write soon again.
$5.35 to your credit

2.25 plow repair

$3.10 on hand now

With love Essie over
The Kauer Cow was bred the 12th of this month Joseph thot' you would wish to have it done if you were here. It was taken to Holmer Williams. I must buy a roll of cheap batting for small cherry trees as the cut worms are coming already. I am going to plant a few rows of garden over home for you to use to save buying so much.
Bye Bye

Dear Miss. Taft: -

Am mailing you a few sour buds this morning. Joseph picked so few that there arn't many to see. But he doesn't like to pick cherries now that can't be put into a crate later on But they are enough for you to see how nice they are. But we are all living in fear as it is so warm no rain and no snow to hold our tender buds back. Sweet cherries are same as these.

I'm feeling misirable have a dreadful cough + cold my lungs pain quite a little. Hope you are well.

Jos. likes the new horse very much she is much smaller than queen but works just as fast. Wish you could drop in this morning and see your farm every thing looks so well. Jos. has all work under way very nicely. The air is full of Spring.

Lovingly Essie. (over)

Jos. is waiting for well man to look over the well we think the screen is coated is why the water flow is so small. That will cost very little. IF I see Mr. Lardie will speak to him about your 1/4 [cents] or not. I can if you wish me to do so.

While she spent her summers on the Peninsula, her primary job as a teacher at the Illinois State School for the Deaf required hired hands to run the farm in her absence. These farmers, and their families, lived on the farm and sent frequent written reports to Ms. Taft.

Received the ans. to my last letter tonight + was very glad as you forgot to mention in your plans about sweet clover so am glad you answered so prompt.

We have another winter to hold things back. Joseph went to town yesterday after lime and is stormed hard all day. He was nearly frozen when he got home. He took the tent to cover his load or everything would have been ruined.

I wrote a letter to Mr. Allen but have had no reply yet. Hope he comes soon. Because the work on the barn needs water.

I told you what Mr. Helfrich said he can get his brother to help him for $3.00 per day. He did not say what he would charge for his own work. Please say what we will do as it is getting late now. And it will take some time to get every thing finished. He will get busy any time you say so.

You will need one ton of hay to last us through.

My Dear Miss. Taft:-

Received the little package and thanks so much for same please take out the cost in our next check.

We had Mr. Lardie haul the Ford Fertilizer the price came up and they charged $20 for #5-00 Roger went down to OM today and paid him for it. Mr. Lardie gave him a receipt for it. We got 5 gal. of gas out of our own money but must get more. The lime has been put on and use of drill paid for. Archie Helfick's drill was in use so Jos. got Murray Tompkin's instead.

Yes we had about a week of real warm weather and thunderstorms then it turned cold and snowed again. Have a white frost every night lately. The fuit buds started some but not hurt any as we can see.

Archie brought the hay so will send that bill in with the rest.

Oh dear but every cent we can scrape goes out on that farm. Some times it would try the patience of a Saint. And we always have Doctor bills. Joseph Doctor all the while I wish he could go to Ann Arbor and see some good ones and perhaps they could tell him what ails him. I have felt so much better after going away on a little vacation. I still get nervous about the way things go but have to hang on and be patient.

There is too much work for me during the Summer but if everything goes right I'm not going to work so hard this year. I dearly love to pick cherries and will do all I can if I'm well enough

The [auer?] cow had her calf some time ago and it was dead when Jos. found it in the morning. Altho' it hadn't been born very long.

We hear there is a new canning factory going up at Elk Rapids I hope so it means more for we farmers here. They are talking [$.06] cherries here perhaps [$.06 1/2]. Mr Wunch is setting 900 trees again this Spring.

Jos. is coming along nicely with the Spring work. And I think you will like the new horse. She needs to have shoes on as her hoofs are broken up a little from going barefoot. Fay will give Jos. her old shoes so that will save buying new ones.

Well I can't think of more to write aobut.

[3,1,90#] hay at $19 per ton=$30.30
$20 you sent me
20 paid for fertilizer
1.00 paid lime drill

.90 you owed me

1.90 you owe me

With love as ever Essie

Apr. 18th 1930
My dear Miss Taft:
Today is my birthday and will celebrate by writing a few lines to you.

It has rained now for nearly two days & is some what colder tonight the frogs are singing so loud you can hardly hear yourself think.

The fruit buds are swelling quite fact so hope it gets cooler.

Jos. had to buy plow repairs as it was nearly beyond using you couldn't plow with it and do a good job.

We got gasoline & cup grease also for [$].80 worth of oil at Hank Lardies. We got 15 gal. of gas. We will pay for half of it then there will be plenty to pump both water & sprayer to spray with.

Our Ladies Aid is having a contest to see which side can earn the most our side feed 85 school teachers Tues evening. I'm still tired from the long hours of work. Thank goodness thats over for once more.

I've been working dreadfully hard of late trying to get the house in shape for you as I won't have time later on to do it. And still have most of the house cleaning to do here. Its pretty hard to keep two houses up. If I could earn an extra $5 I would paper the two rooms for you but can't seem to make the raise it takes all I can scrape to buy other things. It looks nice and clean up there any way even tho' the walls aren't papered. The next job I'll have is to try & put a rope or some thing along the road to keep people from driving on the sod it will be all cut up. I see they make a nice road all over the grass it soon cuts ruts. May be some time I can have a row of stones along there. You have always been careful but others are not.

Mr. Lardie delivered your order and all work is under way. Both Jos. & Roger are very busy every day.

Jos has the chance to buy two ton of loose hay from [penny????] Christopher but has to haul it himself. It will save truckage. You didn't mention horse shoeing. Do you wish it to be done. Please mention.

I will send the bill in so you will know how things stand and where your money has been paid out. We have [fim?????] for oats left from last years as I got a full pint so have plenty left so need not buy more.

1.00 plow point and two springs for Sprayer
1.00 can cup grease

.25 for bolts

My Dear Miss Taft:

Your letter came today so will answer as Roger can mail it in town this evening. Joseph wishes me to tell you that he will be glad to stay until July 1st then you can select your man while here.

We need rain so badly am glad Joseph set your new orchard last Fall as the ground has settled about them and are all ready to start growing this Spring. The fruit buds are coming much faster than we like to see them. Most people have their orchards all worked but not us Jos. will wait until the usual time. It doesn't pay to work too early.

I am 37 years old today It seems now as I look back I was only a girl when I came here have grown up on your farm.

If it doesn't rain soon am afraid the new seeding will suffer. Must hurry and finish supper now. We'll let you hear from more often as to fruit + etc.

Lovingly Essie

P.S. Please come to O.M. and we will wash our feet in the bay as mine are terriably sore. lots of water there. Thanks for Item from paper

Apr. 2nd 1931

My dear Miss. Taft:-

We have been in to see Geo. Lardie + got our 1/4 cent and he says unless some of the outside fruit freezes we won't get over .5[cents] maybe not that. It doesn't sound very good he had a big story to put up. They have to get their their price whether we do or not These people that are setting 5 and six thousand cherry trees are going to be sorry.

Joseph has looked all over for a horse at last found one thru Tony Toulek. This man bought a tractor from Tony so Jos. got the horse for you. She is as sound as a dollar and short + blocky built but strong as a larger horse. has nice shoulders + neck is shorter than queen and not nearly so tall but Mr. T. says he knows you will like her about the size + heft you wanted and couldn't get. We simply can't match Queen. This one weighs between 11 and 12 hundred. When you see her if you don't want her we will take her off your hands. These long legged horses can eat their heads off and never be fat. Is a bay about the size of Fay Dohm's horses and got her for $100. Its the best we could do for the money have looked at lots of horses and couldn't find any as good as this. Must go to be as I'm tired. Cherry buds look fine. Mr. Lardie didn't advise us to spray with oil if not very careful people are going to burn their trees. Will write soon again.

With love.
Essie K.

While she spent her summers on the Peninsula, her primary job as a teacher at the Illinois State School for the Deaf required hired hands to run the farm in her absence. These farmers, and their families, lived on the farm and sent frequent written reports to Ms. Taft. Most letters are written by the farmer’s wives, and provide a record of both agricultural and social history.</text>

April 20th 1920
My Dear Miss Taft:-
I was very
glad to hear from you. I
have had several letters
from Joseph since I wrote to you.
He did not tell me how
much he got out of the hogs
& I did not care to ask over
twice.
Your cherry orchard was all
O.k. last week. But it is so
cold most of the time. That
I am not enjoying my visit
as much as I might. For
we can not take the baby &
go car riding. She has not
been very well since I brought
her out here.
I do not like it out here for
there is thick black mud
every where. And the water
is awful it is not fit to
drink. I will be glad to get
back & get a good drink of
water once more.
Last night I happened to
step off from the cement
walk & slipped down in the
mud & rolled over such a
sight I was. That finished
me. Mamma makes fun of
Mich. sand but I like it
far better than mud.
I would like to go to the
Black Hills before I come
back but I guess I will
have to give it up.
Miss Taft when you
mention clothes it makes me
think of my old clothes. I
could not afford to buy new
ones. Mamma & papa furnished
me with funds to bring me
out here. They thought I would
like it here & stay. So I don't
like to have them buy any
clothes for us. Although they
have [gotten] bought some things
for the children to wear.
They have a beautiful
home here & every thing
to get along with. I would
like to paper one of the rooms
at home this spring but I
can't afford it & won't ask
you to.
Even though it is a tenant
house I like to be clean &
comfortable. For it is my
home as long as I live
in it. Now Try and write to
me again before I leave
for home. That will be the
3rd day of May. I will be
so glad to see you back
again. And I certainly
hope we have a good
summer & lots of cherries.
Mamma & Mary send you
their love. And you have
a lot of mine too.
Your Friend
Essie E Kitchen
P.S. Keep well
