In 1902, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated $20,000 to the City of Traverse City to build a state of the art public library. In response to Carnegie's generous gift, Perry Hannah donated land to be used for the City's new library on Sixth Street. Hannah is considered a father of Traverse City, and was a very successful business owner during the lumbering years of the northwestern province of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.
