Abstract
Collection of scrapbooks and annual programs detailing the work and history of
Traverse City Musicale, now known as Grand Traverse Musicale, from 1932-2013. The
bulk of these records covers the period 1932-1982; Thereafter, the collection covers
sporadic dates. Traverse City Musicale is a social and educational organization
originally founded by women, all of whom could perform some musical talent.
History
Traverse City Musicale, now known as Grand Traverse Musicale, was founded in 1932.
The organization’s mission has always focused on music, including providing quality
musical programs, encouraging the study of music and performance, and supplying
scholarships to young musicians.
Founders of the organization included musicians, teachers and music lovers. The
following is a list of charter members: Louise Buck Alley, Hermione Flagler Hendryx,
Mary Morgan Linsley, Paula Litton, Lola Lutman, Matilda Bartak McManus, Lucille B.
Mintling, Mozelle Bennett Sawyer, Evelyn Pelton Temple, Alice Roberts Titus, and Anne
Wood Wells. Of these, Mozelle Bennett Sawyer was a professional and renowned
violinist, and Alice Roberts Titus was the sister-in-law of novelist and movie scriptwriter,
Harold Titus.
From the 1968-1981 Scrapbook, a condensed history of the Musicale by Mary Alice
Wilson, written November 1974, to be given to new members of the organization:
“Traverse City Musicale began in the mind of Louise Buck Alley who with nine other
women met on February 26, 1932 to discuss the possibilities of a local music club. In
April, that same year, the club was named and a constitution written. Its purpose was
study and promotion of good music and performance of all members. Membership was
selective, by audition, and was limited to 40 in number. Besides regular meetings, the
first Thursday of each month, other public performances and concerts by out-of-town
artists were presented. In 1934 the first scholarships to Interlochen were given.
The first chorus performed in 1933 with seven members. The Christmas program with
the chorus performing and the Traverse City Women’s Club as guests has been an
annual activity for many years. Group singing at the State Hospital was begun in 1958
and continues to be an important activity. A junior club was organized in 1940 and was
active for many years. In 1958 non-performing members were taken in as associates,
and the number was no longer limited to 40. Through the years other changes have
been made. The constitution was re-written in 1972. Membership now has the following
Traverse Area District Library, Woodmere

Traverse City Musicale Collection, 3
classifications: performing, active, honorary, and life. The club became federated with
the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs in 1933.”
Scope and Content Note
The collection is comprised of two series: Traverse City Musicale and Junior
Musicale. Junior musicale is now a defunct sub-group of the Musicale, and the
collection holds only one scrapbook detailing their activities.
Traverse City Musicale is comprised of two sub-series, Annual Programs and
Scrapbooks. For information on individual programs offered, the names of performers,
members and charter members of the organization, see the Annual Programs
sub-series. The Scrapbooks sub-series is largely pasted newspaper clippings
concerning the happenings of the organization. Most were clipped from the Traverse
City Record-Eagle, and provide greater depth and color to the programs put on by the
organization, more so than the Annual Programs.

Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan. This collection contains their meeting minutes,
presidents’ books, photographs, scrapbooks, moving images, financial records,

History: The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City was organized in 1923 by two
sisters, Edna Barnum Lawton and Annette Barnum Power. The club became a member
of the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, INC in 1931. The Friendly Garden Club is
structured into committees; program, civic beautification, horticulture, highway
improvement, garden therapy, publicity, conservation, junior gardening club, and
membership.
The objectives of the Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City are as follows; providing
education, promoting the love of gardening, landscape and floral design, encouraging
civic beautification and environmental responsibility. This civic beautification objective is
pursued through projects where the club members garden and landscape local public
city parks. The “Friendlies”, as they may refer to themselves, also participate in flower
shows. Often these flower shows are to fundraise for gardening projects such as the
improvement of school gardens. The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City has
received numerous awards.
