Lumber Era Photographs, 2
Abstract
Collection of photographs on lumber camps within the Grand Traverse Region, ca.
1890s.
History
Lumber prospecting and sales accounted for much of the population boom and growth
of the Grand Traverse Region. By 1910, much of the area had been harvested, but
settled populations maintained their homesteads, which eventually developed into the
cities and towns that remain today.
Some of the photographs in this collection are of “ghost towns” of Michigan; once an
area had been divested of its timber, workers, families and followers would move on,
leaving behind those things that were not portable. These “towns” were also infrequently
identified as post office locations.
Scope and Content Note
Staff at Traverse City Public Library, now Traverse Area District Library, collected and
preserved photographs donated by anonymous patrons over many years. This
collection was accessioned by the librarians in 1965, and were part of the Michigan
Room collection.
On digital portal, collection is housed within the Grand Traverse Regional Historic
Photograph Collection.

Description
An account of the resource
Script (or survey) for oral history recordings for "Food for Life on Two Peninsulas: Stories from Old Farm Families, Migrant Workers, and the New 'Foodies' of Grand Traverse Bay, An Oral History Collection." This script was followed by volunteer interviewers, to allow for some structure in the interviews, given that each was limited to about 15 minutes. The time limit was imposed to ensure that the participants would not miss any of the Northern Michigan Small Farms Conference 2016, and to encourage as much participation as possible. Traverse Area District Library encourages the sharing, modification, and reuse of this script for similar programs.
