The Traverse City Public Library was formally dedicated on March 10th, 1905. Traverse City mayor E.J. Fulghum, Board of Trustees President E.L. Sprague, and Board of Public Works President C.M. Prall all delivered speeches at the event.

The Ladies Library, established in 1869 was the first library association in Traverse City. This library preceded the City Public Library by over three decades.

Michael McGuire, former director for the Traverse City Public Library, later the Traverse Area District Library, served in that position from 1979 to 2009. He succeeded Robert Onley as director.
