Title
Loading fruit on railcars, 1919
Subject
Fruit--Transportation.
Description
On back of photograph: “Compliments of John A. Jung, 1913 N. Prarie Ln., St. Louis, Mo.”. In photograph, a boxcar is marked “Merchant Despatch Dairy Line”, a refrigerated transit that was jointly owned by the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis Railway (CCC&I), the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, and the New York Central Railroad (NYC), all part of the Cornelius Vanderbilt rail empire; none of these lines ran through the Grand Traverse Region. This image may not be of the Grand Traverse Region, however, this scene depicting the packing of fruit boxes continues to be a common sight as agriculture remains a large part of the identity of the region.
