Mary E. (Prentice) Leatherland was the first permanent settler in what would later become the village of Interlochen. Mary was a widowed mother of four who became a cook in a lumber camp which eventually was located in the Interlochen area. She lived there the rest of her life. Mary lived from 1870 to 1950.
