< ror» Of Grand Traverse Compared with Other
Section* of the Country.
Our friend and correspondent A*' W . R , who has been
traveling extensively for the last month, and ii now in
. Vermont, writes'to us under date of August 2d, as follows: " A brief comparison, from careful observation, of
our Bay country <wtth Southern Michigan, Ohio and New
Yoric, in relation to crops, places us equal, and in many
localities superior. This must be admitted as flattering,
nsthe comparisons are drawn with Greeley's most favored climes. Crops, as a whole, are equally advanced in
x>a8on, being a little behind in some, but advanced in
others. Our corn and oats crops e-jual any, and are raperiorto Western New York, andJon a par with the
(tfirdta of the State, the Mohawk' Valley. "Wheat, and
other crops, equal Grass, though light, equals New
York or Vermont, while our fruit—poaches, and apple#—
ns shown by treps in bearing at the Old Mission, places
us in advance of all othfr localities, not having received
injury by winter cold, or those otherwise disastrous June
frosts, oil bearing their full capacity.
Our Financial position, as compared with States west
of the Mississippi River, shows a much larger "btflanco
in our.fevbr than even our flattering Agricultural worth,
' tight'aa wo ore supposed to be in finances. This is
owipg, undoubtedly, to our ready access to the best of
markets, with, aoch; a variety of cash commodities—flsh,
lumber, wood, and agricultural products, part of which
are unknown in the extreme west (Iowa and Minnesota,)
or if produced iq part, the transportation consumes the
entire profits. The results are, they are burdened with
s kind of ' dickey' trade, cash totall^ unknown; whereas,
our medium of exchange is far mo^j agreeable, small
though the amount be.
Many ether observations, equally in our favor, might
be deduced, b u t a proper amount of investigation by all
interested, woujd not only substantiate the above briefly
drttwn. comparisons, which of themselves have weight
sufficient to convince the skeptical, but would dispel the
discontent harbored by many, to the detriment of their
financial aud social prosperity.

the rate of faro and freight will bo much cheaper than by

THE SUSPENSION BRIDGE.—A correspondent writing
from Niagara Falls to the N. Y. Herald, rays that he has
been informed by a gentleman whose statement is reliable, that *%cre the Suspension Bridge originally sagged
only two or three inches under the weight of a train, it
now sags 20 inches. The general impression in the neighborhood is that this great work of art will one of these
days give way and fall into tho river. Viators now walk
over the bridge instead of crossing in tho trains.
