The Local P r e * .
The Detroit Tribune, among other ralid reasons for
supporting tbe local press gives tbe following: The fact
is too pfain to require farther illustration, that the county
and State papers supply a waut of the people of Michigan which no publication outside of the State can supply.
It may be objected that the home article is not as good
as the foreign one. How can it be as good, we niight
ask, when tbe patronage which legitimately belongs to it
is tarned in another direction? But we do not concede
that it is not as good, for our very object is to prove that
it is better for the people of Michigan, and will improve
it* present character constantly if it siioll reccive a liberal
support Take the case of tbe humblest effort at journalism in the State, and what does it alone do for the
community in which it is located? It makes the fact that
there is such a community known outside of its own
neighborhood, by the medium of its exchanges. It pubr
lishes the local news; it inform* you who ore the county
officers, and what is done in your courts, awl publishes
your legal advertisements and tax sales, and enables you
to tell, those who want to purchase what you have to. sell;
it tells you when political conventions of your county and
State are held, and what was done, and who were put in
nomination; it will give you also some account of your
Governor's message arid State Legislature.' It will bo
seen' that this small county paper docs a great deal. It
does not give much general news, for it is rtarved down
to a dimension that renders it impossible, but you would
find it very hard to get along without it, although you
may now protest that it is worth nothing.

AMERICAN

WATCHES.—APPLCTON. TRACY A

-CoQ WALTHAU, Mass., Manufacturers of PATENT LEVER WATCHES.—These superior Watches are made by the
aid of new and original machinery, expressly designed to secure, with a low palce. a fine, substantial, durable and uniformly reliable time keeper. The movements are new In
construction, and are pronounced by the highe-t authorities
to be faultless In principle and quality, and have been proved
by the most exacting tests to bo reliable and unfailing in action. These watches are manufactured entirely from the
crude materials in a single establishment, by connected and
uniform processes—the manufactory being organised upon
the same system that has bcon adopted In the production of
the nnequaled American flre-arms which enables us to produce a movement at one-half the price of any foreign movement of the same quality; and we guarantee the perfect
performance, forten years, of every watch manufactured by us.
All foreign watches are made by hand, the American watches being the only ones made bv machinery upon aiiuiform
system throughout. Nearly all band-made watch/s are defective, and are continually 'getting out of order. In { i m parts of. the country it Is Impossible to liud good watch repairers and watch repairing Is always uncertain and expensive. The Introduction of American watches disposes of this
difficulty, and country merchants as well lis watch dealers
can keep watches as a part of their miscellaneous stock, and
thus supply their customers with a new staple, which raav be
used aa any other article, without Jny*tery or humbug. Sold
