The Vogel Dissertation records include records created by, or collected by, Robert Vogel in the process of writing his dissertation about the history of settlement on Old Mission Peninsula. Series in the collection are: Dissertation, Reference Materials.
History
Robert S. Vogel, born 1930, was a native of Missouri who married an Old Mission Peninsula native, Helen (Wilson) Vogel, in 1960.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1947-1950 as a meteorologist. He was a graduate student at Michigan State University from 1955-59, receiving an M.A. in Geography. He and his wife returned to Old Mission Peninsula from 1962-63 while he researched material for his Ph.D dissertation on the historical geography of Old Mission Peninsula, which was never published.
He taught briefly at Western Michigan University and North Texas State University before taking a position at Central Missouri State University in 1965. He retired as an Associate Professor of Geography at Central Missouri State University in 1988, and passed away in 1995.
Scope and Content Note
Dissertation consists of the complete, marked-up final draft of Robert Vogel’s dissertation. The dissertation was in progress from 1962-1970, and was not published. The dissertation analyzes the history of Old Mission Peninsula through a geographical lens, and includes seven chapters and a bibliography. It also contains other published or unpublished works written or co-written by Vogel.
Reference Materials consists of the research done by Robert Vogel while writing his dissertation, and includes documents, books, excerpts, papers, notes, reports, maps, and records collected throughout the process.
