Description
Log piles at the pond at Gibbs Mill, 1897. Located in Mayfield, (Mich.). In 1866 George Neal and Lucas Knight, being millwrights, built the Dam across the Mayfield Creek and erected a sawmill nearby run by water power. A cousin of Lucus Knight, Lorraine K. Gibbs, was behind the venture. This was the begining. Two years later, 15 August 1868, Lorraine K. Gibbs and his family and four brothers (James, Arch, Frank and Bird) moved to Mayfield. March 1872, James L. Gibbs and Lorraine K. Gibbs formed a partnership of Gibbs Brothers. Lorraine K Gibbs sold his interest to his brother in 1895. Since then, Lorraine and his son, Harry L. Gibbs, had started a lumber mill west of the village of Kingsley. Lorraine K. Gibbs was a member of the original Boardman River Electric Light and Power Company. He was also the Postmaster for many years.
