a f t e r t h e m a i l t u r n s n o r t h , t h i s side of- t h e I t i o G r a n d e .
B u t suppose ouly four hundred miles a t each e n d is super.

ours, s h o u l d a d m i r e t h e b o l d a n d d a s h i n g style w i t h
w h i c h he h a n d l e s h i s "cowardly c o m p e t i t o r , " y e t t h e y can-,
not forget his t r e a c h c r y and Pufiic faith. T h e y cannot
f o r g o t t h a t all t h a t force a n d a g g r e s s i v e n e a of c h a r a c t e r ,
t h a t intellectual e n e r g y n n d - p o w e r w h i c h h e is now e x h i b i t t i n g o n flio h u s t i n g s o f Illinois, w a s i n v o k e d a g a i n s t
t h e i r rights, t h e i r i n t e r e s t s a n d t h e i r h o n o r ; in t h e late
session of C o n g r e s s , w h e n s t r i k i n g h a n d s w i t h S e w a r d
a n d H a l e , he r a n g e d himself u n d e r t h e b a n n e r of t h a t

t o ' t h e p e o p l e of a n a s c e n t S t a t u t h e r i g h t t o a s t a b l i s h
slaver}- in t h e i r c o n s t i t u t i o n u n l i s s i t w a s s u b m i t t a l b a c k
to the people for ratification. W e are told, h o w e « t & i b a t
t h e issue is confined t o D o u g l a ^ a n d L i n c o l n , a n d t h a t w,c
must c h o o s e b e t w e e n t h e m . A n d h a v e w e S o u t B e r n e r s
sunk so l o w a s t o b e forced t o acctmt a n issue s o d i s h o n orable and i g n o b l e ? — h i t h e r t o t h e South, although a
minority, h a s , b y t h e c o u r a g o a n d p r i d e , u u i o u a n d
intelligence of h e r p e o p l e , m a d e h e r . o w n issues a u d
