H
Julius Steinberg (February 27, 1846-1923), emigrated from Suwalki, Poland Russia and
arrived in Traverse City in 1868. Leaving his child and Mary Steinberg, his wife, in
Suwalki, Steinberg left first for England before purchasing a passage to the United
States. With lumbering and agriculture as the primary industry of Traverse City, peddlers
were useful for supplying necessary goods for geographically distant settlers. Beginning
as a peddler carrying his wares on his back, Julius Steinberg eventually upgraded to a
horse and wagon, before finally establishing a dry goods store in downtown Traverse
City. Julius sent for his family; his wife, Mary, and son, Jacob, arrived in September
1871. Julius had ties to other Jewish immigrants living in the region, likeSolomon
Yalomstein and Julius and Bertha Levinson, who also emigrated from Suwalki in the
1860s.
teinberg opened his store at the newly built “Front St. House Block" on November 6,

1876. From March to July 1877, Steinberg and Julius Levinson were in a partnership,
operating under the name “Star Clothing House.” After Steinberg dissolved the
partnership, Steinberg moved into a space in W. J. Backer’s Boot and Shoe Store as
the City Clothing House. In 1878, Steinberg’s store was now in the McManus Building,
directly opposite Paige and Brusch's Store. For his dry goods business, Steinberg would
travel often to Chicago and the East Coast for merchandise, and Jacob Steinberg and
eventually, his youngest son, Alec, often accompanied him. In 1879, construction for
Steinberg’s new building began on the northside of Front Street, opposite Winnie &
Stevens's Grocery and one door east of Engine House, at which point Steinberg had
two store fronts, one of which he was compelled to close in January 1880. Now called
Steinberg & Co., the store was one of three Jewish owned stores, which neighbored
each other on Front Street. In May 1882, the partnership between Julius Steinberg and
Solomon Goldman under the firm name of J. Steinberg & Co. was dissolved. At which
point Steinberg enlarged his store to fit more stock. Two of Julius Steinberg’s children
died in 1883 and 1885.
In 1885, Steinberg became involved in the establishment of the Hebrew Congregation in
Traverse City, and was elected as treasurer of the organization. Together with S.
Yalomstein and J. Levinson, Steinberg concluded a contract with J.G. Holiday for the
building of a new synagogue, near the congregational church. In 1886, the synagogue

teinberg went on to build the Grand Opera House above his dry goods store in 1891.

His plans and ideas for the building were a source of slight contention with his architect,
who could not keep track of all of Steinberg’s changes to the plans. Julius was very
particular about the quality of the goods in his store as well as the construction material
while building the opera house. In 1907, he and his wife moved to Detroit, but would
return to Grand Traverse Bay every summer. Steinberg opened the Lyric Theater in
1916 next door.Today, the only remnant of the Steinberg empire in Traverse City is a
whisper in the form of the State Theater, which stands on the site of the Lyric Theater
constructed by Julius Steinberg.

(sometime before 1977, likely the Elk’s Club Fire next to the Steinberg Block in 1963),
which destroyed some buildings downtown. In the destruction, Julius Steinberg’s
business letters of 1886 were found, allegedly by Jack Bensley.
