T

H E expense involved and the time required in the compilation
of a work of this- nature is much greater than- the general
public has any idea of, and the Publishers are fully aware

that the following pages do not altogether show where the great
amount of Money and time has been spent.
No business venture has been made during the past year that
has not been attended with much risk, and in the contemplation of
a subscription list that does not much more than half return the

amount of expense incurred; our regrets at having started and satisfaction in having finished this Atlas are about equal. We are,
however, satisfied that our efforts will be generally appreciated and
that this publication will prove of much •value to those who have
had the good sense and judgment to subscribe for it.
In conclusion, we wish to extend our thanks to the several
members of the Board of Supervisors of 1896-97 for valuable assistance rendered, and to Mr. Roswell Leavitt, of Bellaire, to whom we
are indebted for historical data.

IISTORICAL NOTES.
In 1840 the unorganized county of Megesee was laid off, and in 1843 the name was changed to
Antrim. The unorganized county embraced the territory of Towns 29, 30, 31 and 32 North, between the
east line of Range 5 West and Grand Traverse Bay. This is the earliest defined existence of the territory
of Antrim County. In 1863, at the time of the organization of Antrim County,. part of Town 28 North,
Range 8 West, attached to Kalkaska, and part of Town 28 North, Range 9 West, attached to Grand
Traverse, were added to Antrim, and in 1863 Towns 32 North, Ranges. 5, 6 and 7 West, were detached from
Antrim and attached to Charlevoix County. With these changes Antrim County exists to-day as described
above.
From 1840 to 1853 Antrim was attached to Mackinac County as Omeena Township. At the latter date
Grand Traverse County was organized, and Antrim was attached to the new county as Antrim Township.
In 1857 the Supervisors of Grand Traverse separated Antrim into two towns : Milton, bounded east
by Torch Lake and Torch River, south by -Round Lake, west by Elk Lake, until it intersects section line
running north between Sections 10 and 11, thence north to the south line of Town 3o North, Range 9 West,
following said town line as north boundary to Torch Lake ; and Megesee, embracing all of the county not
included in Milton.
In 1863 the Legislature organized Antrim County, and the unorganized counties of Kalkaska, Crawford and Otsego were attached for municipal and judicial purposes. The name of the town of Megesee
was changed to Elk Rapids, and the town of Banks was organized, embracing all of the county lying north
of the south line of Town 31 North. The county-seat was established at the village of Elk Rapids, and
the first election was held in April, 1863, the number of votes polled being 66.
The organization of the several townships is as follows :—
March, 1857, ry Supervisoi-s of 'Grand Traverse County, changed by Supervisors of
Milton.
Antrim to Helena in 1865, and that part of the township lying west
of Torch Lake and Torch River was reorganized as Milton in the
same year. That part of the original township lying east of Torch
Lake and Torch River, constituting the present town of Helena.
Elk Rapids.. ....March, 1857, by Supervisors of Grand Traverse County.as Megesee, changed by Legislature in 1863 to Elk Rapids.

The first school district was organized May 17, 1857, and comprised all that part of To-wn 29 North,
Range 9 West, lying east of Grand Traverse Bay, west of Elk Lake, and south of Elk River, and that part
of Sections 20 and 21 lying north of Elk River. At the present time there are 72 school districts, all
but one being organized. The school population is 4,084, and the pupils enrolled in 1896 numbered 3,363.
