Are the Packers Profiteers?
Plain Facts About the Meat Business
Tbe Federal Trade Commission in its recent report on war
profits, stated that the five large meat packere have been
profiteering aad that they have a monoi>oly of the market.
These conclusions, if fair and just, are matters of serious
coBCeru net only to those engaged is the meat packing
business but to every other cltiren of our fonntry.

>1

The flgiir^ given on profits are misleading and the sl^te^nt
;ed Wthe
that the jwckere have a monopoly is onsupported
facto.

"3

The packers mentioned in the repprt stand ready to prove
their proflto reasonable and neceteaiy.

The meat Business is one of the largest American industries.
Aliy dtiscu who would familiarize himself nith its details
must be prepared for luige totals.
i

, been stated, the larger portion of the profits earned has
been used to finance huge stocks of goods and to proride
additions and improvemente made necessary by the enormous
demands of our amuy and navy and tbe Allies.

*

*

*

If yon are a business man you will appreciate the signifi
cance of these facte. If you are acquainted with the business,
thlk this rnatter over with some business acquaintance—
with your banker, say—ind ask him to compare profits of
the packing industrj' with those of any other large indnstry
at the present time.
No evidence is offered by tlie Federal Trade Conmnssion
in support of the statement that the large iiaekere have a
monopoly. The Commission'-s own report sliows the large
nuinber and importance of other packers.

The report states that the aggr^te profits of^fonr iai^
packere were' f 140,000,000 foi' the three war years.

Tbe packers roentloficd in tbe statement stand ready toprove to any fair minded person that they are in keen
competition with each other, and that they have no power
to manipulate prices.

His sum is comiwred with |I9,000,000 jib the average annml
prefit for the thnv years before the war, making it apj^ar
that the yar profit wa8.fl21,000,00fl grealeivtliitB the pre
war profit

If this were no(- Irue they wooM not dare to make this
positive statement.

This compares a three-year profit with a one-y^r profit—a •
manifestly Unfair jnetSiod of comparison. It Is not only
misleading, but the Federal Trade Commission apparently
has made a mistake in the figures themselves..
^

. The aggregate three-year profit of fl4O,(W0,000 was eariied
on sales of ever four and a half billioil dollars.. It means
about three cento on each dollar of sales—or a mere fraction
of a cent per ponpd of .product.
Packers' profits are a n^ligible factor in prices of li^
, stock and meats. No other large busiaess is condacted
upon sneb small margins of profit

vFurthermore—and this is Very important—only a small por
tion of this profit has been paid in dividends. The balance
has been put back into the businesses. It lind to be, as
• yon ^lize when you consider the proMcms the packers
have had to solve^nd solve qntCkly—during tbcjie war
years.
To condnep this bneiness in war times, nith higher costs
and the necessity of paying two or three Ijm^ the foniier
prices for live stock, has required the use of two or three
times the ordinary amount of woriting capital. The additioual piofit makes only a fair return oti this, and as has

Fnrthermore, goveniment figures show that the*fire large
papers meationed in the report account for, only about
. one-third of the meat business of tbe country.
-

\

They wirt it were possible to interest you in the details of
their business. Of how, for instance, they ean'sell dfeesed
beef for less than the cost of the iive animal, owing to
ntilisation of by-products, and of the wonderful story of
the methods of distribution tbrou'ghunl this broad land, as .
well as in other countries.
. - ,
. e' '
Tbe five packers mentioned feel jnstifled^in co-operating
with each other to the extent of togeOia presenting this
public statement..
They have been able to do a big job for your government
in its time of needi they have met all war time dana^ds
promptly and completely and tjpey are willing to trust their
case 4o tbe fairraindrilness of the American people with
the facto before them.

all of these far away big investments turn out) and is gohig out among
them to get his iiiouey back (find another sucker) it will be some
contest, a Michigan farmer getting his money buck from a California
goldbricker. I may be wrong in this but 1 don’l guess I am. I also

have other farms; in fact all kinds of farms, iinpi-oved and fully equqiped, •

Just a few woitls about the War brings Stauips. The impressioD
seems to be that you are tying yonr money np for a period of years; the
fact of the matter is, a War ^vings Stamp is a ten day dnift on the
• United States Troisury. presentable ainl payable at any imst office in
' the Unit^ States; provided you should wish to use ;he mouey the day it
is presented, all that is necessary is to name the-party to whom you wish
it paid. The stamp is not transferable, as I iinderstaud it, but yon can
'have the money jiaid to anyone yon wish, to name. As a suviugs invest
ment for the small investbr^rfre is nothing belter, you are dniwing a
good rate of interest and its^ill face value is available at len days

ment, receivers, settlement at a small iwrcenfage of its faeewaloe, etc:,
as it might be with a bank ceriiticate. A Unilotl Slates Bond or obliga

face value is paid. '
