Buffalo. N. Y..’s^^. 21.-They arc
having exciting Umet on Lake Brio
this fall. In fact there Is a little war
on between the Canadian authorities
and the fishermen from the American
side of the lake.
Lake Brie used to be noted as the
most prolific fresh water producer of
fish In the world. The supply has
been steadily decreasing. during the
past twenty years because. It Is
cUlmed, the fishermen on tho Amer
lean side were ruthless In their de
struction of the fish. Thousands of
tons of thU natural food supply went
Into the soli every year as fertiliser,
and there seemed to be no regard for
Finally tho Canadian government
decided to protect the fish on lu sido
of the InternatlQpal lino which runs
through the cenier of Lake Erie
Cruisers wen- placed on guard and
American fish tugs were warned to
keep on their own side.
Of late years there have been fre
quent brushes. Tbe Americans finding
that the fishing was better In Cana
dian ‘waters, crosst'd over, and the
Canuck cruisers made It hot for them.
This summer two or three American
tugs were captured and confiscated.
Others have had narrow escapes. The
cruiser . Vigilant. In pursuit of the
Americans, has not hesitated to fire,
and several boats have pot into port
badly peppered.
The John O. Barnhurt of Brie. Pa.,
was the last to receive a baptism of
rmall caliber cannon shot. Her too
works were riddled and several of her
crew were wounded by flying splinters.
There will be no complications over
these border affairs between England
and the rnitod SUtes because the
Americans are at^mlttodly poachers.
