All Michigan persons are safe in San
Francisco so far as can be gathered by telegraph.
Oakland. Cal.. April 21-The escape of
3.100 fugitives from 8an Francisco was cut
today. The ferry buiiaing^tbbk fire and
the last means of escape to pakiand were
gone. A ring of flames encircled the unfor
tunates gather^ about the wharf and Bay
streef. and It was feared that they would be
burned to death or driven into the sea. The
flames s%vept toward Fort Mason, where there
are a big powder magazine and arsenal, but
the firemen saved both.
New York. April 21.—Reports from San
Francisco at 1:30 state that the fires started
by the wind last night are under control and
did little damage. It,-depends on the wind
whether the Mafket'^street ferry house will
stand or not. Much splendid unselfishness
has bien displayed. Women ggve up their
blankets, and sat up or walked about all night,
to cover the exhausted men who had fought
the fire until nearly dead. The sharp busi
ness-like precision of the American soldiery
stood the city In good stead. Toughs find
that they cannot disdbey'the men who wear
the uniform of Uncle Sam witl^out paying the
death penalty.
1 he famine is checked. Three train loads
of provisions were received. Eleven postal
clerks were taken out and found to be alive.
They wore three days under the debris with
out food and water. All the mail is saved.
