THE PASSING,OF MRS. BATES.
In tbe passing of Mrs. Martha R
Cram-Bates, Traverse City
Grand Traverse region has lost one of
Its noblest women, one of Its most
widely Xnou-n and oldest residents.
Mrs. Bales came here with her parenU
In 1863. and since that lime her Influ
ence; has been always for tbe gooil,
the irue and the noble and she has
iteen a wonderful power of love
.among the young people.
Sdeb a woman as Mrs. Bates, fills
a place distincUy her own. To her
. none feared to go with their troubles
for they were sure to rMeive some In. spiring thought that w^d help theta
over the rough places/^la many house
holds her name has become as pre
cious as those of tbe family.
Tbe home life .of Mr*. Bate* has
l>eea ideal and that is tbe highest
compliineDt which can be paid to a
woman. Her voice was always sweet,
-her tones gentle and hind and from
this home which was blessed by bet.
presence has radiated a warmth of
love and friendly feeling toward all
- the world. As was related by a mem- her of her family years ago, Mrs.
Bates’ heart -was so great, that anyj
etray child could find a place
and even the dumb, friendless animals
were drawn to her In their loneliness
and none were denied ibo loving
caress and tender words.
Mm. Bates will be greatly missed
home, society and literary circles but
her influence will go on for all eter
nit^. While she has passed out of
' earthly and material existence into the
reality and a higher life, much of her
work here will be continued by thoae
of her househcld who were In close
touch with it snd to whom she has en
trusted much.
