manufactur_ eiN. The practical use of the mercerixed goods only tends lo'increase its use.
The new mercerized waists for fall and winter are examples. They are rapidly
taking the place of silks for ordinary wear as they are more servicable; for once they
are soiled a washing and an ironing ami they are as good u new.
The patterns and colors are very handsome—prices range from $1.75 to $6.00.
The process of mercerizing is given so )-ou can see how it incriases the Uf< and
strength of the goods.

obtain this luster the general method is as fol
lows: The yams to be treated are i
while in a stretched condition in a strong solution of
caustic soda for about 15 minutes; they are then washed and rinsed. By this treatment ihe cotton is left its
natural length and undergoes not the least shrinkage
or comraction while it gains from 20 to 100 per cent in
strength.
The luster produced upon cotton fiber by this pro
cess is due to two causes. (1) A complete change in
the structure of the fiber, resulting in it's assuming a
swelled and firmly rounded form. (2) The removal
of the outer skin of the'„ fiber. The fiber of cdtton
when viewed under a microscope is an irregular, flat
but twisted ribbon.
_
Under this new process the fiber is instantly and rad
ically changed- It untwists, contracts, swells >and as
sumes a firmly rounded form. This is permanmt and
will remain after bleaching and dyeiog.

The action of the dye also destroys the outer skin of
the cotton fiber. To the absence of this is ^ue ^ a

that the ra>w of light as they fall upon the surface arc
reflected instead of being absorbed. This gives tbe

Qurs tbe Tur Store

Howmany times do you pick up a paper glance over the advertisements, and
say, only an "ad" not believing one half that you read, knowing that you have been
fooled so many times by misleading statements, or by having cheap, trashy goods of
fered you at the price of reliable merchandise until you have lost all confidence in
advertisements. We only ask you to investigate our every claim and prove their
truthfulness. We want your confidence in us and our advertisements, they are writ
ten for you. The Items quoted on this page are not any special sale, they are just
every day prices and are good as long as the goods last, in many cases it won't be
long, as smalllots are picked up very quickly. Read every item, they are worthy of
yourjiotice.
