flUHLE OP OUIISIIIA.

Port Antonio. Jamaica, via Kingston, June 22.—(Special.!'
; —It is announced upon high authority that almost 20.000
' Spanish soldiers have arrived at Santiago since the American
j advance began and it is thought that ciencral Pando may be
. : able to effect a junction with General Linar« at Santiago.
. New York. June jS.—fSpeci4l.)—The Sun's correij>ona*
■ ; ent at Savanilla. cables:'‘The water supply of the city of Santiago was cut off at 9 o'clock Sunday night, and nothing but' cistern wjter is now available to the Spaniards there. Short
ly after dark, Cuban scouts ihoved cautiously forward, to
' within two miles of Santiago. . They could see countless
Spanish camp fires glimmering behind the lines of rillc pits a
: mile from the city, which lay in the darkness beyond, . 'J'he
' scouts found some of the water mains underground and rc.' ported the condition of affairs to General Wheeler.
Madrid. June 28.—Specialll—The Spanish goventmeni
r does not credit the report that an American squadron is to
visit Spanish waters, but, the ministers say, they have taken
every possible precaution, and Aat the ports are q1l reaily.

Washiogton. June 27.—[Special^—One of the greatest
coiTtpIiments that could be paid to thejiaval reser\'cs.and the
; Michigan reserves in particular, was in the selection of three
ships manned exclusively by men from the naval militia in
the squadron to cross the ocean. In addition to this, on the
Or^on arc 63 men from the Illinois naval reserves. The
■ selection of so many sailors from the ranks of the militia
, caused almost a sensation when announced today.
It had been generally thought when the ships were -sent
- to Europe that they would be such cruisers as the New Or
leans, .St-Paul anebMinneapolis, or ships of that class. The
selections as made indicate that Admiral Sampson has made
highly flattering reports of the way the reserve ships' havfe
been kept, as only shipsnn the very finest condition will be
, sent to the Spanish coast and the Yosemiic • and the ot-ber
two must be in first-class shaj)c. As some pretty imiwrtanl
work is cut out for Commodore Watson's fleet the Michigan
; boys on the Yosemite ari pretty certain to see some historymaking events before their ships touch American shores
after luving this week,

Onboard the Rio Giiama, via Kingston. Jamaica, June
27.—ISpecial.J—The Spanisb.and American advance outtwsts
are now almost close enough to sec the whites of each other’s
eyes, and a collision may occur at any moment. Last night
the outposts, consisting of two companies of the Seventh in-,
fantry, occupied positions at right angles to the rear, guarding
the crossings a mile and a haK beyond Sabinalla. where three
foments of General Lawton's division are camped. TheEighth. Second, and Twenty-second Massachusetts, with-the
Rough Rideis, Tenth cavalry, and portions of several other
laments, are strung out behind them. Eight bdndred
Cubans under General Gontales^are camped around GeneriU
Lawton's headquarters, but less than 500 of them did scout
duty last night. General Wheeler today, with the First.
Second and Tenth cavalry, and Rough Riders, with dynamite
guns, moved up to where General Lawton's outposts were last
night, and four batteries of the Third artillery and four
galling guns, with special detail under Lieutenant Parker,
were brought up and planted pn the brpwof a hill overlooking tbe basin in which Santiago lies.
The tops of every hill and mountain north and east of
Santiago are occupied by blockhouses from whence the
Spaniards can view the movements of the Amferican army as
it advances beyond Sabmilla: while to the eastward gashing
every knoll or bit of high ground are Spanish intrenchments.
Spies report that inside the mtrenchine%ts are fow par
allel lines of rifle pits shoulder deep, and in front arc marked
ranges and several rows of-barbed wire fences.
• ■ The general opinion is that more aitilleo' will be. neces
sary before it will be safe to make an assault upon the Span
ish works.
