Kingsley Area Newspaper Collection, 2
Abstract
Collection contains newspapers significant to regional history, including Kingsley Hustler,
Kingsley Echo, the Kingsley Courier, Grand Traverse Sun (Kingsley), The North Woods
Traveler (Fife LakeKingsley), The Village Good News (Kingsley), and Good News
(Kingsley); and select editions of the following newspapers: The Morning Record
(Traverse City), Traverse City RecordEagle, Preview Community Weekly, The Traverse
Bay News, The Sunday News Detroit and The Dick E. Bird News (satirical paper out of
Acme, MI). All the newspapers are concerned with regional history, especially for the
villages of Kingsley, Fife Lake and Mayfield, and the area surrounding Arbutus Lake.
Series in this collection include: Newspapers.
History
The content of the newspapers found in this collection cover the contemporary news of the
area, especially the villages of Kingsley, Fife Lake and Mayfield, the area surrounding
Arbutus Lake, and the townships of Fife Lake, Mayfield and Paradise. Traverse City and
Grand Traverse County are also featured frequently.
It is believed that Dr. Myron S. Brownson, of Walton Junction and later Kingsley,
established a paper called the Paradise Enterprise in 1888. There are no known copies of
this paper in existence. The more wellknown papers from the early part of the 20th century
include the Kingsley Echo (also published by Brownson) and the Kingsley Courier.
Two newspapers published in Kingsley, Michigan, continued under different names and
changed ownership. The Kingsley Courier became the Grand Traverse Sun, sometime
during the fall of 1913. The Village Good News (Kingsley) was originally published by
Kingsley resident Jolyn Gildursky, and changed hands in July 1996 to Kingsley resident
Connie Newell, becoming the Good News (Kingsley).
Scope and Content Note
The Newspapers series developed from the anonymous donations of area residents, and
from the collecting work of past librarians at the Kingsley Branch Library. Due to sporadic
collecting, the Library does not have complete runs for most of these newspapers. Several
of the newspapers in the Collection only have a few editions available, and these editions
may not be complete.
Currently, there are no published or unpublished histories on the publishing industry in
Kingsley and the surrounding area. Their limited run to a small population has kept the
newspapers in obscurity. As the Kingsley Branch Library continues to accession more
editions, they will become available to patrons. Also, no index is currently available for
these newspapers.
For some of the more widely published newspapers, such as the Traverse City
Kingsley Branch Library
Local History Collections
Kingsley Area Newspaper Collection, 3
RecordEagle, complete runs are available through the Woodmere Branch of the Traverse
Area District Library, and the Olson Library at Northwestern Michigan College. The Olson
Library also carries several papers published in Fife Lake around the turn of the 20th
century. Please see those institutions for more information.
Series in this collection include: Newspapers.
