Kingsley Family Histories Collection, 2
Abstract
Collection of original family histories and genealogies, ephemera and other artifacts,
focusing on families with significant ties to Kingsley, Michigan. The series in the collection
are Bowden, Brownson, Case, Clark, Dean and Ramey, Earl, Fewless (Fewlass),
Fenton, Harper, Kingsley, Liskum, Lyle, Nickerson, Stinson, Van Pelt, Webster, and
Miscellaneous.
History
The village of Kingsley has not had an official entity acting as a repository for local history;
the public library has filled that role for the community. In the years of the library’s operation,
a number of anonymous donors have given the library various documents especially family
histories and genealogies of families that settled in Kingsley, Michigan, and the
surrounding villages of Buckley, Mayfield and Summit City. The Kingsley Branch Library
continues to collect these documents as they are donated.
Scope and Content Note
Collection includes locally published family histories and genealogies of individual families
that settled in Kingsley. Newspaper articles and photocopies of family photograph albums
also make up a significant portion of the content. Original records in the collection include
an original score of local composer Lillian J. Liskum’s hymn, “Seek First the Kingdom” and
Rhea Stinson Smith’s oral history.
The Clark series, which contains the original ledgers of Wylie Clark, Little School Farmer,
contains the names of many farmers Clark worked with in the 1930s and 1940s, and sheds
light on the agricultural happenings in Kingsley at the time.
Although not a frequent occurrence, there are some business advertisements included
within the family series.
