Abstract
Collection of Michigan and Grand Traverse County Maps, with a focus on the area around
Kingsley. Mostly reproductions, but includes original plotplans and surveys of land in the
village of Kingsley. Finding aid features itemlevel description.
History
Brief history of Grand Traverse County Boundaries
Grand Traverse County was created from Omeena County on April 7, 1851. Omeena
County had been attached to Mackinac County. On February 3, 1858, the region was
reorganized: Grand Traverse County gained all of Omeena County, and Omeena was
eliminated; Antrim, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee and Wexford Counties all detached
from Mackinac County, and attached to Grand Traverse County; Manistee County
detached from Ottawa County, and attached to Grand Traverse County; All attachments
were “for judicial and municipal purposes” (From Michigan: Atlas of Historical County
Boundaries, ed. John H. Long, 1997).
Scope and Content Note
The Historical Map Collection contains mostly reproductions of original maps early in
Michigan’s history.
Digital Map and Atlas Collections
Additional maps and atlases of Michigan counties are available online through the
University of Michigan’s Digital Library. The “Michigan County Histories and Atlases,” was
a digitization project that provides digital editions of many early histories of counties
throughout Michigan: <http://quod.lib.umich.edu/m/micounty/>.
The histories included in this project for Grand Traverse County include the following. There
are many more histories containing information about the region, but these listed are
specific to the Grand Traverse region. All of the histories included in the project are in the
public domain. Many are available in print at the Branches of the Traverse Area District
Library as well:

the controversy between Mackinac and the Mormons, 1854.
