Dear Vicki
I’m not sure what year the enclosed article by Mr. Park was written. He was my first teacher in 1927.
I attended grades 1 – 8 other teachers – Miss Janowitz, Mrs Robertson and Mrs Pitcher
We lived a short distance east of the school and one morning I didn’t wake up until I heard the last bell ringing at 8:55 I jumped out of bed, dressed and made it to school on time As a reward Mrs. Pitcher gave me an 8 × 10 picture of a lady with her rabbit, because I hadn’t been absent or tardy for a year.
We had a yearly county track meet. I was the best girl runner and I beat the best boy runner, Vic LaBar from Fife Lake.
Had a school play every year and the parents attended it.
Our yard was large enough for a ball field. Lucille Kilmury and I played work up with the boys. I was catcher one time – missed catching the ball which hit me on the bridge of my nose so I ended up with 2 black eyes which seemed to last forever.
Opal Seaberg lived on Bluff Road and if she’d give me a half peanut butter sandwich I’d walk part way home with her. Sometimes her dad would bring her to school in the horse and buggy.
The county commissioner visited once a year. We had to be on our best behavior when he was there.
We were also checked on by a school nurse. As a result I hd had my tonsils removed and dental work done by Dr. Sheets.
Five in my class – Lucille Kilmury, “Buck” Chilson, Helen Carroll, Opal Seaberg, and myself.
I hope this and the article by Mr. Park will help with your history of Maple Grove.
Sincerely
Norma McManus Rasmussen
