advance began and it is thought that General Pando may be
able to effect a junction with General Linares at Santiago.

eot at Savanilla, cables:“The water supply of the city of San
tiago was cut off at 9 o'clock Sunday night, and nothing but
dstem water is now available to the Spaniards there. Short­
ly after dark, Cuban scouts moved cautiously forward, to
within two miles of Santiago.
They could see countless
Spanish camp Ares glimmering behind the lines of rifle pits a
mile from the city, which lay in the darkness beyond. The
scouts found some of the water mains underground and re­
ported the condition of affairs to General Wheeler.
