Cable communication between Cape Haiti and Cuba is
^interrupted.

DIRINGICHIEVEMENT OF CRUISER MIRRIEHEID. .
Kingston. Jamaica, June 6.—{Special.]—Communication
between the island of Cuba and the outside world was severed
yesterday.
The Kingston-Saotiago cable was cut Monday and the
Marblehead, Yankee and St. Louis cut the Haitien cable
lunninginto Guantanamo bay yesterday. The ^nds were
buoyed and Rear Admiral Sampson can Publish communica
tion with Washington direa.
The Marblehead also engaged and drove a Spanish gun
boat into Guanunamo harbor and shelled and reduced the
fortihcations.
The insuigents co-operated on the land side. The Mar
blehead on Monday, when the insufgeots pressed forward
west of Santiago, shelled the Spaniards, who fled to the
mountains, strewing'the path with dead and wounded.
Santiago is on the verge of starvation. All the food has
been seized for the army and navy and the troop>s and sai]6rs
are on half rations.
V ,
Rear Admiral Sampson has offlcially declared that the
purpose of the bombardment of Santiago was to clear the
way for American and Cuban troops. That object has been
attained.
The admiral has personally commended Ensign Palmer
for approaching within 150 yards of the Spanish batteries at
night and learning that the Spaniards were remounting their
guns.
The American commander is anxious to bring about an
exchange of Lieutenant Hobson and his companions of the
Merrimac. The admiral sent the Vixen with a flag of truce
to the entrance of the harbor yesterday, offering to exchange
for the lieutenant and his party some prisoners taken from a
prize of the Marbleheac^. oflf Cardenas. Admiral Cervera
considered the matter all night and sent word today that be
was powerless to act. He referred the matter to the military
governor and the latter referred it to Captain-General
Blanco. A long delay is probable.

SAGtSTA HAS DESERTED GER. ADGUSTI.
New York, June 9.—ISpecial.j—Madrid advices this af
ternoon say: "Sagasta has deserted General Augusti. com
manding the Spanish forces at Manila, and 00 doubt the city
has been captured by General Aguinaldo, assisted by Admiral
Dewey. The government, by every means, is preparing the
people for the news.

FIRST REINFORCEMENTS FOR SIMPSON.
Washington, June 9.—[Special.]—It is believed here that
the first reinforcements of Sampson s fleet have arrived off
Santiago. They are 800 marines under command of Lieut..
Col. Huntington, who sailed three days ago from Key West,
on the steamer Panther.
The naval officers are confident that with this small force
Admiral Sampson will be able immudiateljj' to take pos^ssion of any important points in the neighborhood of Santiago
he may deem necessary to scr\-e as a base for the occupation
of regular troops when they arrive.
