the terrific impact of the tons of metal that were poured upon
her, till, when ten miles west of Morro. Cei^era turned the
vessel's bow toward the shore and made a last desperate
effort to keep her out of Ae enemy’s hands. She was sinkWgjthen and burning in a doren places. Still her guns kept
at work and a white flag showed from her only at the last.
At the start the awful fire of the battleships had been
poured on the ifiagship, but others were not foigotten. In
the ternWe dm wnd uproar made by the heavy guns and the
continuous crash and rattle of the rapid fire batteries little
except results could be seen.
The flagship fought her way more than ten miles up the
cokpt before her prow was turned shoreward, The Vizcaya
and Oquendo had not made half that distance before their
cases were hopeless and they, too, were turned shoreward.
But they had not been idle. Their crews fought with desper

against American merciless precision. When the battered

The two detsroyers with Cervera had come out -behind
the big Vizcaya. As they swept out through the smoke and
uproar the little Corsair swung out to block the way of the
craft that even the m^onster Oregon had held in dread. As
the Corsair.came up she opened on the destroyers with her
little six-pounder. They fired back as they came, but were
bent on more desperate business and ran by their plucky
liftle foe like a flash. But they still had the battleship
deal with, and in the face of the terrible fire that the big
ships poured upon them the destroyers both turned back

six-pounders, Occasionally the wind tore the smoke, aside and one look
caught a momentary glimpse of the tragedy.
Close upon the Colon's destruction, almbst simultane
ously, came the doom «f the Oquendo and the X^izcaya.
While all had apparently been pounding away at the
Colon, the Vizcaya and Oquendo had to face the Iowa, Texand Indiana. Under the fire of this ponderous trio, the
great cruisers went down to destruction with fearful swift-
