THIS WEEK

Washington. June a;.—ISpecial]—One of the greatest
complimenu that could be paid to the naval reserves and the
Michigan reserves in particular, was in the selection of three
ships manned exclusively by men from the naval militia in
the squadron to cross the ocean. In addition to this, on the
Oregon are 63 men from the Illinois naval reserves. The
selection of so many sailors from the ranks of the militia
caused almost a sensation when announced today.
It had been generally thought when the ships were sent
to Europe that they would be such cruisers as the New Or
leans, Si. Paul and Minil^apolis, or ships of that class. The
selections as made indicate that Admiral Sampson has made
highly flaitering^reports of the way the reserve ships have
been kept, as only ships in the very finest condition will be
sent to the Spanish coast and the Yosemite and the other
two must be in first-class shape. As some pretty important
work is cut out for Commodore Watson's fleet the Michigan
boys on the Yosemite are pretty certain tq see some history
making events before their ships touch American shores
after leaving this week.
