STRONG STIMULANTS USED
To Influence Action of the Heart—Mr. Mc
Kinley Realizes His Condition

SOME IMPKOVEMENT AT 4:00 P. M.
Much Alarm Still Felt. But Physicians areEncour-

ased by Hopeful Signs and Indications of
Gain in Strength
Buffalo, Sept. 15. 4 l»- m.—The condition of the r
at this hour is still encoar^ng and there are signs of im—Should this4ondition continue until 6 o'clock
tomorrow morning his physicians .believe the crisis will be
passed.
^
Buffalo, Sept. 13. 1 p. m.—The Prudent is slightly bet
ter; His improvement consists simply in a better response to
strong heart stimulants. It is believed, he could not surs-ive
another sinking spell. When the strychnine was injected this
morning the president feebly asked what it was. When told,
he asked if the emergency required such a remedy, and when
answered in the affirmative ilic president replied. “1 realiire
it.”
The president's-two sisters and Senator Hanna have ar
rived. making the journey from Cleveland at the rate of a
. -mile a minute.
All the members of the cabinet and Vice President
- Roosevelt have been summoned.
Shortly after n a. m. the clouds became somewhat dark,
and everything looked rather gloomy. The sunshine, that
had been in the sick room had disappeared. The
looked from his half open eyes and said, feebly, "What a
change from yesterday, doctor. How gloomy it is.”
Buffalo, Sept. 13—Mrs. McKinley has not been pemitted
to visit the president, and she cannot understand it. as she
has not been told of the sinking spell this morning. She
feels very disheartened because she cannot see her husband
1:30 p.m.—The president is sleeping, probacy due to
the use of drugs. His condition is unchanged. The crisis is
expected tonight. His recovery is regarded as remote.
Buffalo. Sept. 13-An official bulletin gt 5:30 says the
president has more than held his own since morning, and his
condition justifies the expectation of further improvement
