oal Department and BeporU Oonflloting.
Washington. June 25—[Special!—While the chiefs in the
war department have received little or no details of the bat
tle between the Rough Riders and the Spaniards yesterday,
the opinion is that the battle was most important. The
sound of falling timber shows that the Spaniards were pre
paring fortifications, probably for ambush, say theoretical
fighters, and it was a dash right then or not at all; as to wait
for reinforcements was to wait too long.
The members of General Miles’ staff are pleased • with
the first work done by the army and say that it shows they
will not be behind the navy"^^n good work.
General Miles
said that he had no advices from Santiago but was satisfied
that the general plan of battle was being carried out, and
that the boys were fighting today and would fight harder
tomorrow. He said the Spaniards were not to be given fur
ther time to prepare.
There is expectation of important newt lomorri^w.
It is expected that the Michigan Thirty-third wilt be able
to get into the fight by Monday, also Winan's battalion of
the Thirty-fourth, as the Yale was under orders to make all
speed.
Secreury Alger sa>t that she could make the trip in
three da>’s, if pushed. Michigan will get into it id a hurry
and General Duffield will see some of the warm work that
he wanted.
From the fact that the press dispatches place the num
ber of killed from thirteen to sixteen and gives the names of
those who lost their lives. General Shafter's statemant that
only ten were killed is believed to be incorrect.
That the
Generals information on this point was meagre at the time
the dsipatch was written is shown by his failure to give
the name of but one man killed.

WIRNED OF IN IMBUSCIDE.
New York, June 2 s—1 Special j — Playa del Esie cable from
the World correspondent says that the reports of the dead
and wounded are yet conflicting. The official list of the in
jured is withheld by the medical department for the present.
The cavalry all fought dismounted. It is reported that the
Cubans warned Col. Wood of the Spanish ambuscade, but he
refused to heed the warning. Gen. Shafter remains aboard
the Seguranca.

GENERAL SHAFTER'S REPORT.
Washington, June 25.—Gen. Shafter has sent to the war
department a dispatch about the desperate fight between the
American rough riders, cavalrymen and Spanish troops, which
took place yesterday not far from Sevilla. The dispatch is
dated Playa del Este, June 25.—"To the Adjutant General.
Washington: Furthcr’oews from Gen. Wheeler places the
•umber of men lost in firing 10 killed and 40 wounded. Capt.
Capron, First United States V'olunteer cavalry, was killed;
wounded, Maj. Brodie, Capt. Me. Clintoch and Lieut. Thom,
as'of the First Volunteer cavalry, Maj. Bell, Capt. Knox
and Lieut. Brian of the First United Sutes cavalry. Capt.
Knox was wounded seriously. Capt. Waioright, formerly re
ported wounded, was uninjured. The names of other
killed and wounded are not yet definately known.
The Spaniards occupied a very strong and intrenched
position on a high hill. The firing lasted about an hour and
the enemy was driven from bis position, which is now occu
pied by our troops about a mile and a half from Sevilla.
Enemy has retired toward Santiago.
