TRAVEB8E OITT, MICH., THURSDAY, JUNE SS. 1898.

HOT WOJLAHEAD!
Gon. Bhafter's Troops .Have Landed Under
Protection of the Ouns of the
American Warships.

AHACK TO BE FROM REAR AND SIDE
Two Michigan Begiments of Volunteers To Be
In the First Big Battle Near Santi
ago With Shafter.'
Thirty-Third aegim0.1t and One Battalion of Thirty-Fourth
St&rted For Newport News Teeterdsy—Company M Not
Ittcdaded in the First Detachment-One Kan Killed on
Battleship Texas, Which Bombarded Oalmnas.
Washington, June 23.—jSpecial.]—The navy department
has advices from Admiral Sampson stating that the landing
of the ti^wps was carried on successfully, while the war ves
sels bombarded Cabanas to divert attention. The Texas had
one man killed.
S#cretar>' Alger tonight received a cablegram from Gen
eral Shafter WPIaya de Liste. saying that the troops have
been successfully landed at Baiquairi.

mtCK SPANISH REAR AND SIDE.
Washington. June rr.—[Special!—Major General Miles
has re^ethS^her message from Captain Allen, chief sig
nal ofltierin Cum. saying that the landing of troops has act
ually begun and Vas in progress when the dispatch was sent.
The message also said the attack of .the American army is
being so arranged that the Spaniards would be assaulted
both from the rear and side.

ORDER ISSUED Hr GENERAL MILES.
Washington, June 22.—|Special.]—The order for the
Michigan troops to leave was issued by General Miles to Ma
jor General Graham, commanding the Second corps, as fol
lows; "With the approval of the secreury of war you will
detail Brigadier-General Dufheld and one regiment and one
battalion of another regiment of his command to proceed
this morning by rail to New'port News with ten days' travel
rations. On hit arrival at Newport News General DufTield
will go aboard one of the auxiliary cruisers now ajiA-aiting to
transport his command to Santiago. Upon his arrival at
that place they will report to General Shafter. commanding
United Slates forces. The troops will carry complete camp
equipage and full supplies of ammunition for Held service.
It is understood that not to exceed six horses can be taken
on board ship.
fSigned]
N. A. Mjle.s
Major-General Commanding."

DUFFiELD’S BRIGADE
TO FIGHT AT SANTIAGO.
Washington, June 22.—[Special.)—It is not likely the
6rst big battle at Santiago will take place before the arrival
of General Duffield's Michigan brigade and possibly the
whole of General Heno'’s reinforcements. It is thought at
the war office that General Linares will choose as his place
of battle the ground In front of his fortifications. General
Shafter will choose the time of battle. This will not be unta he has surveyed all the roads leading to Santiago. Generral Linares is not likely to send an army to the disembark
ing place to meet General Shafter. If such an army were
routed it would rush pell mell into Santiago, demoralizing
the troop* there.
A well informed officer at the war department today said
that the big battle would not take place for ten days, and
when it did there would be two Michigan regiments in it.
