REPORTS CONFIRMED IN CHICAGO AND GRAND RAPIDS
Piflriiar Messages Stated That Shafter's Army Had
Fallen Back But It Was Evidently Only
a Temporary Move.
Wasbingion, July 4-(Speolal)—2:40 a. m.—It is reported on what
la believed to be reliable autbority, that Admiral Sampson's fleet yes
terday engaged the fleet of Admiral Oervera and entirely destroyed it.
Washington, July 4,—(Special)—2:40 A m.~The following cable
' dispatch was given out at the White House last night:
‘ Playa del Este, July 3.—(Speolal)—The destruction of Admiral
Cervera’B fleet is conflrmed.
(Signed) “NED ALLEN, Llentenant Colonel." ,
Washington. July 3.—[Special]—The following statement was given out at the White
House [to-night: "General Shafter telegraphed from Playa del Este. July 3." Early this
morning I seat a demand for the immediate surrender of Santiago, threatening to bombard
the city. I believe Lhe place will be surrendered."
• ^
This contradicts the report that General Shafter had fallen back.
Siboney. Cuba,.July 2, 7 p. m. \ia. Kingston Jamaica. July 3, Copyright 1898 by As«>ciciated Press.[Special]—Fighting on right of our line this afternoon developed unexpectedly
yesterdky. where General Lawton was assaulting El Caney. The Spanish made an attack
' in forcej on our position pouring in volley after volley in quick succession with remarkable
regularity, Our return fire was certainly effective and continued strong after the Spanish
volleys become rar^ and less hea\7.
N^eanwhiie thje batterries on Grimes Hill were booming away at the middle of the
'enemy’s' line, matexlialiy aiding a flanking movement. The shelling from the Spanish fleet
was less active and ipparently gave our fleet but little concern.
; At this hour a re^rt has reached here that General Lawton aided by fresher regi*
ments sent him early in thd afternoon has turned the enemy’s left and the troops are
already in the city, where an almokt hand to hand encouater is going on in the

■■ The spuation when the Associated Press corrcsp>ondent left the front was such that
the capture of the city tonight (Saturday) will not be sueprising although General Shafter
himself'when the ci)rrespondent left him three hours ago, did not expect it. General
Shafter. ^however, sent word this afternoon to General Garcia that the surrender of the city
would not be long delayed.

EAOLY DISFATGHES OF YE$TE001Y.

Washington, July 3.—(Special—The following dispatch was received from General
Shafter this af^rnoon:
^‘Playa del Este, July 3.—To the Secretary- of W’ar. Washington—Camp near Sevilla,
. Cuba.—We have the town well invested on the north and east but with a very thin line.
Upon approaiAing it we find it of such a character and the defenses so strong it will be im
possible carry it liy storm with our present force.
"Our losses up to date will aggregate about one thousand, but the list has not yet
b6en made. There is but little sickness outside of exhaustion from the intense heat and
exertibn of the battle of the day before yesterday, and the almost consUnt fire which is kept
up on the trenches.
"The wagon road to the rear is kept up with some difficulty on account of ihe rains
but I will be able to use it for the present.
"Ghi^ral Wheeler is seriously ill and will probably have to go to the rear today.

Secretary Alger sent the following reply to General Shafter. “The President directs
me to fay that you have ^he gratitude and thanks of the nation for the brilliant and efiecttive work of your noble army on July i. The steady valor and heroism of the officers and
men thrill the American people with pride. The country mourns the brave men who fell in
battle. They have added new names to our roll of heroes.
,
- (Signed.) “R. A. Alger, Secretary of War."
Secretary Alger, when asked what course was to be pursued in view of General
Shafter's report of the conditions at Santiago, said that the Government did not intend to
make any of its plans public and give the enemy an oj^portunity of knowing what w^s intend
ed. It is understood tJJat General Shafter will at once receive inst^ctions.
The War Department officials have been in conference at the ■Whiih House and the
War department. All of General Shatters dispatches were not made public for reasons of
expediency. It is understood that he will withdraw to the hills near the sea and await
reinforcements, which will be sent as soon os possible.

Americans are resting on'their arms to-day. Do not knoNv what, our losses have been, but
they have been very heavy. Reinforcements will be rushed forward to Shafter as rapidly as
possible. All the energies of the department will be bent to thetask of giving him several
thousand men.”
